dmh,...that used to be my gun, I restored it about 10 years ago and traded it two years later,...it's a great little gun and seems to have been well looked after.
I was a total mess when I bought it and it still cost me more than the 2200 the're asking for it now.
I also fitted a new hinge pin on it and shot light Gamebore 16's through it.
Better not dwell on it too much at that price or I'll buy it back

Best,

CJ

Knowing you did the work might tempt me into wanting it...even though it's a 16ga.

Proof testing is not that expensive, just over £20. What does cost the money though is the preparation as bores must be polished out so there are no marks or dents and bulges and it is tight on the face. If the barrels are clean then this cuts it down a lot but then there will be the shipping. I would say that it is worth it if the gun is considered o.k. by someone knowledgeable about English gun proof requirements and the barrels walls are thick enough. I have submitted many damascus blackpowder proof guns for nitro proof and the vast majority have passed. Bonehills were usually strongly built guns. Lagopus.....

Warrilow will price as Brand Value level three (BV3 - most Brit maker's name's). The gun appears to be a second grade BLE which makes it Original Quality grade six (OQ6 - plain SLNE, 2nd grade BLE, 1st grade BLNE). The Current Condition level is, after CJ's post, known to be not less than five (CC5 - well restored))

BV3-OQ6-CC5 = $1,336 for a 12 bore gun of 1890 ish to 1960 ish vintage at USA retail. 16 bore guns seem to currently get a premium of about 2X. So, a price of $2,650 at a major USA retailer for this gun would not seem unreasonable.

Does it fit you? Are the stock dimensions close enough for you to adapt or adjust? Does it handle to you liking, either for fun shooting or for serious shooting? Does it "feel" right in your hands? Do you truly enjoy the aesthetics - does it make you smile? Is the price within your range without straining the budget to where it will be "millstone" arond your neck?

CJ is very knowledgable and I'd expect light load, low pressure nitro 16's to be just fine.

As lagopus pointed out, proof testing is not expensive. But the real cost is what is termed "carriage", the money you must pay to someone in England with an import/export license. This cost me about $400 several years ago.

At the time I had sent my Warrilow to be reproofed it was legal to ship an antique (pre-1898) direct to the proof house. The Proof House however (Birmingham) did not have an export license and refused to return it to me. I had to get someone to do it and pay "carriage".

About $50 to send it insured, about $50 to have it re-proofed, and about $400 to get it back....priceless.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Well, I waited to long on this one. I'm off tomorrow and was going to go have a look at it, but I just checked on the web site and it sold today. C.J., did you get your old gun back? In any case, thanks everyone for the replies.
