In the original post by Greg, I did explain using the .700 ring for 12 ga. and setting to zero. Insert in barrel and read dial, if double do other barrel, they could be different bore and usually are by a few thousands. I stated that the readings would be between .725-.732.(I have a few "elsies" that have .723 bore) and that the dial would read +.025-.032.
Why not reset dial once it is in barrel, you already know what bore is so why get confused with the dial going from plus to minus coming out and having to figure out what the reading is.
To me much easier to read.

Mine won't read 16 ga. the head alone is .624, and the bores on my "elsies" are .650.

You are making it way more difficult than it really is. If you set the dial to zero going in, every reading you get is a direct reading on the dial. In other words, if the dial reads 23, the measurement is .623 or .723. If the muzzle reading is 97, the muzzle diameter is .697. The whole idea is to move the settings of a measuring device as seldom as possible and to have as much direct reading as possible. My Galazan micrometer reads 16 gauge just fine. The only exception is that it will not read an extremely full choke. If the gauge stops in the barrel, you know you have more choke than the reading on the gauge when the gauge stops. No fuss, no muss. What is the difference between .026 and .034 in a 16 gauge choke? They're both full. When I see someone resetting a gauge when it is in the barrel of my gun, I take the gun away from him because I know he doesn't know what he is doing and is not going to buy the gun.

Greg, I think I answered your 16ga question on the other thread. Yes, your gauge will work for both 12's and 16's--except, as noted above, when you have a very underbored and/or tightly choked 16. Then it may not go in. But just start at 0 and if the bore's .662, that's what the gauge will read. Numbers will get smaller as you get into the choke area. Same thing as with the 12: Just subtract choke diameter from bore diameter and it tells you how much constriction you really have.
