Mauser-98 8x57JS with West Germany proof marks, but letters AH and mark on second pic are unknown to me. Any idea?

There are numbers 967 and it seems its date code, Sept, 1967
I guess AH and mark that looks like W/W with tail is trade marks of some maker in W.Germany.

Maybe Jani knows it?

Federal Eagle over N for Normal proof, not forced. Koln/Cologne Proofhouse mark of the crowns in a shield(post 1968?). And I think the "AH" to be the date code but 0-9 for A-K would make it 07??? The mark of the 2 "W"s possibly with a "+" and a "F" is sure to have its origin with a Waffen, Waffenfabrik or Waffenwerke. Eidgenossicsche Wafenfabrik, Bern has a single "W" with a "+" and a "F", but I don't see any other Swiss style state or national marks. Is it a "Favorit" model with the distinctive double trigger forced into the sinlge military style guard? If so it is probably by Waffen-Frankonia in Wurzburg( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%BCrzburg ) who was a wholesaler of refurbed Mauser pattern sporting rifles.

No, it's not Favorite, but the idea sounds good. Will wait for Frankonia reply.
Any idea since when Germans use letter-year code?

There were some changes to the marks in 1961 in West Germany, but 1968 seems to be the date when the date codes in lower case were an option. Then in May of 1973 changes were made to, among others, allowing the date code in capital letters. Interesting in the 1968 rules is the fact that weapons destined to non-members of the International Congress of Proof were exempt from proof. I've read some posts here that post 1912 longarms slated for the US didn't experience Nitro proof but under the 1968 rules no proof was required. Prior to May 22, 1946, Britian, a non-member, had a special agreement of proof reciprocity with German, but it was terminated by Britian at that date. East Germany continued with their quaility control for all and doesn't look to have had any letter date codes.

Kind Regards,
