I'd like to find a black handguard that would fit a Merkel 1620.
Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

John Budgen whose handgaurds were featured about a month ago in Shooting Sportsman makes black ones. I have one and it is extremly well made. John is in Murray, KY. Phone 270-753-0305 or e-mail Johnwbugden@bellsouth.net

I have been buying ones Galazan (Conneccticutt Shotgun) sells for years -- they are black. I quickly learned to buy one size smaller (eg., 16 gauge for use on 12s and 20 gauge ones for use on 16s) to reduce visual clutter along rib. Same size problem with Galco ones. Galazan's sell for about USD45 and Galco's for USD55. Galazan's have a "pebble" finish that I like better than smooth leather of Galco's.

Thanks for the leads!
Niklas, I had that same thought regarding going a size smaller. Seems like it would spread the top opening a bit more, yet be just as functional.

Jeff's Outfitters has them in black. I bought one for a .410, and it looks as good as the Galcos I have examined.

In addition, before I put a new one on, I bend the edges (that will be adjacent to rib) doown as much as I can, so that they lay even closer to barrels. For me one size smaller makes a big difference, in part because I shoot tight choked guns and take some care to center patterns. Mostly, I hunt ducks, geese and pheasants, all birds where there is time to make sure all is right before tripping trigger. Niklas

Are there hand gaurds with cutouts for barrels with sling attachments? I just bought a French shotgun that has this so my handgaurd does not fit.

Hansli, perfect, black and a 20 gauge size! You got a deal! Thanks!!
Niklas, thanks for the sizing advice and bending tip. I do use this gun for upland, but I also shoot skeet and a little SC with it, and those barrels get hot!

Dave: I'm not a big fan of the guards. It just seems like an extra thing to mess around with. I just use a glove when I need to protect from the heat, like if shooting skeet or clays.

I used one on an Elsie hammer gun, and after shooting it a lot noticed considerable wear through the blueing....

Well, I'll try it and see how it goes. I use this gun a lot and the bluing is pretty much gone from the triggerguard tang. A little off the barrels will balance things out.
