Randy,
Thanks for serving us well! We need more like you, willing to serve this country as many of us did in an earlier time.

Jim,

You're welcome. I'll have 21 years total service in about 3 weeks with about half of this on active duty (including some all expense paid trips to exotic lands!)

Those caps move laterally easily once the rim and whatever metal shank they have clear the chamber. Had some luck removing a solid snap cap from a Beretta O/U. Looped a string around the snap cap near the rim which allowed enough tug away from the extractor to get the rim past the extractor. No harm done.

The Beretta extractor probably could have been pushed in far enough to remove with the rim underneath it.

I have a set of nickel plated snap caps. I tried them in my newest toy, an N.R. Davis double. In the left tube the snap cap slipped past the extractor and jammed under it. I was able to wiggle it out with only removing the barrels. I tried an assortment of once fired hulls without problems. The snap cap must have an undersize rim.

Snap caps are the creation of the Devil.
I was loading double guns for a gentleman last week and he had plastic caps in both his EELL's when I came to load them the ejectors jumped over both of them on both guns. Then the drive started and we were inundated with partridge.
I cut the snap caps out hurriedly with my knife and we got down to business.
After the drive was over the gent asked if I had got the snap caps to place back in the guns to transport them to the next drive.
I think my glare withered him.

Salopian,

I won't use the plastic ones because I had the rim break off and jam in the barrel before. At least I did not need to worry about it being stuck under the lifter.

To avoid in future, get a couple of old Activ plastic hulls, punch out primers, replace with BIC mechanical pencil erasers, cut off crimp area and shorten such that they can be easily distinguished from live shotshells, place in chambers, pull triggers, take off forend, open breech, remove, close breach, replace forend, put away. Place expensive snapcaps in case with your turnscrews, jampot, and collected works of A. A. Milne. Lock case. Put away.

On my Lefevers I just open the gun, hold triggers back, close gun. Feel indicators to be sure the hammers are down. Store in desired manner.
