The take-down Model 1897/97 system is exactly like the Model 12. The system features the same wear adjustment system, except the screw that locks the key for the adjusting sleeve is on the outside of the barrel extension instead of on the face. On my gun at least the action needs to be unlocked (hammer down) to allow it to be disassembled.

Jack, my 37s all do exactly the same thing, as do the, egads, Mossbergs. Oh, the horror! Anyhow, if it makes you feel good, I'm guessing you won't go blind doing it...

Ted, large portions of my retinas are already floating around in my eyeballs so abuse, self or otherwise inflicted, has already taken its toll. I tried the "trick" with my Deerslayer cop gun. Slide doesn't drop. If I don't pull back slide while holding release, it doesn't even unlatch. I need to get more wornout guns or run them in JB til they are.
