I've been getting more and more interested in vintage sporting rifles, which then leads to side interests in vintage sights and scopes. So when I can, I've been buying Lyman Alaskans, sometimes buying old marginally done sporterized rifles with nice scopes so that I could put the scopes on better period rifles. I've got a couple of Lyman Alaskans and some Norman Ford Texans. My question is, does anyone have disassembly instructions for these? Some of these have rings on, that require the scope to be disassembled to remove the old rings and put on the new.

The combination of scopes and mounts for pre-war rifles is limitless. The first thing to remember is that if the rings are not two piece the rings are removable from the mount. The few Alaskan ones I’ve done you just need to remove the eyepiece and the jam nut. On mounts that have windage adjustment in the rear ring remove the front ring slid this over the front and then slid the rear into the rear ring still on the mount. If the rings have a long leg on them you will have to remove both front and back.

On pre-war German scopes the eyepiece and the focal adjustment in front of it can sometime be a problem to remove so I remove the elevation knob. Be careful, many times the crosswire (post and cross post) comes out with the knob.

Sorry for the bad photos, I had a scope I needed to remove from it’s mount so I thought this would be a good time to do that. I used my point-shoot-shop camera.

On the Lyman Alaskan, remove the ocular lens bell and its lock ring by turning counter-clockwise, then loosen the scope ring ring and slide it off. Make note of the position of the lens bell before removing so you can put it back in the same spot. Also a good time to clean the inside of the ocular lens if it needs to be cleaned. I'm not familiar with the Texan scopes.
