Great Pictures!

Your photos remind me of how my family hunts in Catalunya. Hunting, just like everything else in Spain seems to be much more of a "communtity" event where those from the local "poblet" are part of the "Coto Social de Caza." I understand that in a driven hunt, those supporting the shooters are usually paid, but it still looks like a very community oriented experience. Moreover, everyone's role in the hunt and the way in which hunt proceeds seems to be determined by tradition; shooters, loaders, beaters, game cart, meals, etc... --all tradition.

It is so different from hunting here in the US. As I am sure you are aware, here most hunting is done individually or in small groups of 2-5 guys. Any kind of drinking alcohol is outlawed in bthe field (unlike the Spanish tradtion of carry a "bota" and if you have a scotch, beer, glass of wine it is normally back a camp or at home. Most of us don't share a meal together after a hunt unless we are camping, staying in a hotel, or at a lodge.

Your pictures just brought back many memories (although somewhat different from Spain) that I miss so much about Europe.

Thank you.

Thanks for the interesting post and photos. Something I've always wanted to do. Used to course hares in Co.Limerick back in the fifties and the group fun and jokes were great times. I kinda think beating might be like that. On deer drives in the S. Jersey woods there is always a lot of fun too. Of course there is the added thrill that a load of buckshot may come your way.

Living in England and semi retired I go to quite a few large shoots in the area picking up with my two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers (rare breeds here) and could get to go about five times per week if I wanted (usually around three) for five months or more of the year. I start off on the grouse moors then the partridge then the pheasant. Those two dogs probably retrieve more game in a season that most would in a lifetime. I just like working the dogs. What you fail to mention is that the beaters get a couple of days driven bird shooting towards the end of the season as a reward as well as the payment. No-one goes for the money; you would be poor if you did, but is good excercise and far better than a gym. You also get quite a lot of pigeon and vermin shooting on the estate as a bonus also. It seems to me that if these kind of events were used in this country that more young people would get into hunting and the shooting sports.

Just my 2 cents.

That thought never crosssed my mind. I think you're right. We've got the wide-open spaces and growing publics thirsting for new experiences. There's also that amalgam of egalitarianism that's appealing to the young.

Kids with doubts about whether they had shooting prowess or stomach for killing could join others of the same bent and mix with the experienced of all ages who would gently bring them to the fun and good manners of a hunt.
