Seen A Remington 1889 Hammer gun converted to .45-70!! It was Profesionaly done,Looked Great, Felt Fantastic. Wish I had the chance to shoot it. the guy wanted $1500.00 for it.Think thats to much $$ ?? Whats your opinion?

If it shoots like it should, it's underpriced IMHO.

Shotguns converted to rifles are usually not a good thing. The balance is usually wrong (the bbls have way too much meat) and/or the regulation is off. In any case, the 45-70 is not a dangerous game ctg, and that's what double rifles are designed for.

In any case, the 45-70 is not a dangerous game ctg, and that's what double rifles are designed for. You do come up with some odd thoughts. All of those guys with small bore double rifles probably should give up deer and antelope hunting with them since they aren't dangerous game.

The Gun was Properly Regulated. it makes a nice laying down 8 at 100yrd. It's sleaved, shimed, then soldered in place. It also has express flip up triple rear sights for 150 & 200 yrds respectively. Gun is VERY Clean. I will not mention names but the Company that did the sleeving & shimming do ALOT of These. They know what there doing.
If I had the $$ that gun would have came home with me. The Down side is they ruined a perfectley good 16 gauge Remington hammergun!!!! Damn the Luck. I love my 16's!!!

Hmmm
I would think it better to suggest that the .45-70 is not an African dangerous game rifle.
It will make a grizzly bear lie down and be a rug.

For those who cannot afford a proper double rifle, such a conversion, if done properly(!) can be a useful surrogate. I'm fortunate enough to have a few genuine DRs but wouldn't mind owning this one; should be neat for boar hunting. - Jani

Jani, You are very right! Has anyone ever followed a thread about waiting for some company to import a 45-70 sxs into the USA? There is a great deal of demand and no product. The largest game most Americans will ever hunt is a deer. Take a look at the sheer numbers of licenses issued. Even in the old Springfield Trapdoor loading the 45-70 makes a decent deer gun for the brush. For boar the 45-70 is a great round. I have used it and it takes a boar down very quickly. Jeff, if you someone who is doing the conversions, I would hope you post their information. Remington 1889 16-gauge guns are relatively rare. If it was in decent shape prior to the conversion the seller likely could have gotten more $$$ for it from a collector. I spoke to Charles Semmer about this last year and of his records of nearly 400 1889 Remingtons he has encountered, he had only 16 recorded 16 gauge guns. Mine was the 16th.
