I handled the New Ithaca Over under today. The top of the reciever resembles a Knick. I'm told they also plan a side by side though not exactly sure it will be the NID design. The gun was designed and built in Ohio and though it was a working gun, there was no engraving and the wood wasn't really finished or checkered yet. Target price is in the $2,500 range.
It was amazing to close an Ithaca Over under that didn't sound like a screen door slaming (SKB) It was distinctive looking but not too unconventional. The Ithaca guys told me they made 3500 guns last year and are growing.
I thought about you Walt. Looks like you might wind up adding another chapter after all.
Best, Dick

Interesting that none of the companies that made classic American sxs ever made OU's, except Remington. And they were no longer making their own sxs by then. Of course the OU didn't really catch on commercially until after the introduction of the Superposed, and by that time most of the American makers of sxs were in their twilight years. (I did exclude Savage and Marlin. But neither of those makers produced sxs on their own. They bought other companies that did.)
I seem to recall that Emil Flues made at least one (some?) OU. Think we may have discussed that here.

Just got in and I'm Whipped. All day at the show and then out to Titusville for a rocket launch. I talked to them some more today and will have more info tommorow. Yes it is a scaled frame, They devoped the OU in 4 1/2 months. They plan a side by side by next Shot show. I plan to tour the plant asap, really nice people with a passion for guns. We talked about Lefevers a lot, they really like guns. No they have no Lefever plans.

You know if they made a XX size frame 16 or 20 Lefever it would be a real winner. That, or just bring out a G grade in 12 gauge. Be one heck of a upgrade platform to work with. I would send it right to a bare foot engraver for a little scratching.
I think there is more market for a new Lefever than there was for a new NID. Just another double might not be that big of a deal. The bulk of the Lefevers are 30 years older than the bulk of the Foxes, Smiths or Parkers. They were done first and show their age all too often. Just think how sweat a XX frame 28 with 30" barrels would be to have. Now that is a box to open under your Christmas tree next year.

The market for a repro Lefever would be tiny. It's small enough as it is for all the other stuff out there. The design is complex and would be expensive to make and unprofitable. The sideplates would make stocking more expensive. They are beautiful old guns with their place in history; I love them and appreciate their uniqueness, but it is NOT one to reproduce. Neither is the NID Ithaca, as Steve Lamboy found out. JR
