Ya Dave, take OWD's advice and buy my Lefever :-) Its a graded gun, rare, and has the most attractive rib matting ever done on a doublegun. Take a look at the pics....oh ya, it comes with a very nice English walnut blank too ;-)

LeFusil and others --I am dying to buy that Lefever. But to be honest, right now, although I have saved my pennies in "shooting budget" and feel relatively economically secure, California is threatening to issue IOUs to its state employees. I am a teacher, and the school district I work for "says" they have enough money to pay us through March without issuing IOUs if the state cuts of funding as they are threatening to do. That means if the budget stalemate is not resolved before then, I may not get paid and in lieu of a paycheck they may issue us IOUs. I could handle that for several months no sweat, but after 6 months things would get bad. Two years ago, California went over 180 days without a budget. So, unfortunately I have to hold off on any major purchases until I am sure the state has passed a budget and I will continue to get paid. Damn, that Lefever is right up my ally! But as they say, timing is everything.

Thanks for all your suggestions and I will be buying that American double --I just have to wait to this state budget crisis is over. The other thing that makes me nervous (and feeling guilty?) is that it seems everywhere I turn, friends and family are loosing their jobs --and I just went and blew $200 on a few more Canada goose decoys for my goose spread.

Finally, sorry I did not respond earlier to some of these excellent ideas and posts, but I was "gone fishing" on Saturday and goose hunting this morning. We got skunked on the Canadas, but look what I caught on Saturday! Biggest fish I ever reeled in.

In recent months I have shyed away from many deals on guns as economic state of the union is frightening with no reason to be optimistic for 2009. I used to feel empathy for tough luck of others, but now I do not. I suppose that's because there seem to be many out there willing to steal life saving of others. Just look at our politicians handing over tax money by billions to financial institutions w/o accountablility of how it's going to be spent. I suppose lot of it will find its way back into Mr. Senators and Mr. Congressman's pocket and accountability would make that more difficult.

Those are freshwater stripers out in CA aren't they? I fish for them here in the salt in the NE, great gamefish!

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

My understanding (I am no expert on stripers) is that in California, these stripers spend their summer in the Pacific Ocean and return to the delta to spawn in the winter. We also have landlocked stripers in some of the bigger lakes, but this fish was caught close to where the Sacramento River meets the San Joaquin River and flows into the San Francisco Bay. Took me about a good 20 mins. to real that fish in --it was a blast! The largest striper my friends and family caught is 22 lbs. That was a big fish.
