I always wondered, what karat gold goes into the inlays on a gun? Thanks.

Higher karat stuff so it is malliable enough to easily hammer into the undercuts.

Bill McGraw of Ithaca fame used 24 k for the yellow gold. I don't know the purity of the colored gold he used. I would think Bill's predecessors used the same.

I use 24ct. for most inlays. 22ct. and 20 ct. gold can be used for some inlays due to it's ability to resist wearing delicate detail off, such as on the bottom of a frame where the hand carries/handles it. The colored golds are of a lower ct. rating due to the various alloys used in the mix.

Mr. Ken, can you hammer in lower karat colored golds or do you solder them in?

Rocketman --- I only hammer in inlays. The colored golds require the very closest fitting of inlay due to hardness of gold & it work hardens after first smack with hammer and punch.

Thank you, Mr. Ken. As I suspected.
