Years ago, Sherman Bell had a couple articles in DGJ regarding the Short Ten and I got the bug. Finally have the two guns shown below. Top one a newly purchased Francotte 10bore, 7 3/4#, look forward to that as an upland/waterfowl piece. Last night my brother just finished bending the stock up to 2 5/8", sweet. Other a Geo. Bate 10bore, at 9 3/4#, tight chokes and good for turkey, and has taken a few geese, but it is one heavy puppy to be lugging around. I've used only the RST loads(niceshot and lead), a few boxes of Bismuth short ten loads, and a couple boxes of 2 7/8" lead I've found at gun shows. As a relative newcomer to the short ten, I'd appreciate your sharing experience with the 10's. Curious about the following: #1 What guns do you use and for what? #2 What are your loads of choice? #3 What kind of reloader do you use? I don't see any that can be bought to load the 2 7/8"? #4 Photos would be nice. Happy New Year, Randy

Nice Guns man. As i said in your earlier post...thats a great light weight for a 10...a heavyish game gun nearly.Great for game & clays with sensible yet ooomphy loads. Then you have that nice "lump" of Bates for the still sensible heavier loads...your sorted mate..nice. I have not yet garnered a 10 bore...but would like on of the light short chamber ones like your lovely Francotte can't help with your qs, but wanted to say "NICE" Couldn't you modify a mec 600?....trim a 3" shell & do the old Hartin Crimp. Still a bit furry from last night..but others will have it in great detail I'd bet Franc

Craig- is the top ils. Smith an Ideal? If so, does it have Damascus barrels? I thought Smith and Parker stopped importing those right around WW1 era- I know of two "way out of the way" gun shops (not boutique "Gun Shoppes" like Ivory Ballz, etc" and am going on a Winchester "recon run" in next several days- they have some older Remington Green paper unfired 10 gauge in the original 2 and 7/8" length- before the "Elmer Keith/Chas. Askins/John Olin 3 and 1/2" R.C. 10 bore load, and the Ithaca 10 NID- Elmer keith's favorite medicine for pheasants, so I read- Wow-shoot 'em, pick 'em, field strip 'em, all with one "Bang"--RWTF

RMC, MEC 600 reloader comes in 10ga and if you contact MEC they also have an adapter kit to make it 2 7/8" machine. I used it for my 10ga Charles Daly until I sold it. The loads listed in Double Gun Journal articles by Sherman Bell were loads I used.

If you are going to roll crimp them you don't need the plate. I made a plate out of 1/4" aluminum that I had on hand for short 2 9/16" 16 ga, but I roll crimp them so it is not needed. You only need it if you are crimping them and only for the last two stages on the Mec 600.
Happy New Year to everyone.

So far I've stuck to BP with the 2-5/8" A.Peterman (W&C Scott) and Baker-patent 2-7/8" LC Smith here. One of the old fashioned coffee grinder roll crimp tools does great with cut down Federal plastics; just turn the lip in a bit and it holds top card in fine, no need to do the full roll with plastic.
Also, the 10 ga MEC 600 Jr that I got came set up for 3-1/2" of course, but I discovered that it has a second set of holes in the mounting post that makes it into a perfect 2-7/8" pie-crimping machine, just like the 12 and 20 gauge machines can be changed between 2-3/4" and 3" with no need for a spacer plate.

I don't know when Hunter Arms gave up composite iron and steel barrels, but the Brothers P were still turning out a few Damascus guns in 1926, and I know of at least one vent rib Damascus barrel Parker.
I'm a lazy guy and for the little I shoot my 10-gauge guns I use a pair of Gauge Mates and shoot 12-gauge ammo. Just the other day I looked at my Baker $100 Pigeon Gun 10-gauge and couldn't believe the amount of plastic crud built up from the end of the Gauge Mates to the end of the chamber and into the forcing cone. I spent an hour doing repeated scrubbing and swabbing Hoppes and I'll bet some more has come up as I left a coat of Hoppes in there.

Craig, Beautiful LC's. Got to be a real rare set of LC 10's. and in such great condition. About a year ago there was an LC post 13 Ideal 16ga. with a damascus barrel on GB. I've got a steel barreled Pigeon 12ga., they are neat guns. Thanks for posting the photos. Randy

I use a Scott 10 for turkeys, giant Canadas, and ducks. It is open bored in both barrels. No matter. Weighs a ton, but that's just fine with me. I use 110 or 120 gr of Swiss 1.5 fg and just under 1.5 oz of lead or bismuth. Been a while since I have shot it, but it is a hoot at the trap range on Wednesday nights... I saw some really nice gobblers this morning that might be in the hunt this spring. Brent
