This procedure is covered VERY superficially in Frank de Haas' books, but, as always, the devil is in the details and Frank doesn't show the details or even talk about them much. This is the original Ballard design and can be changed to a more conventional (and much easier to accomplish) style if wanted, but then the details wouldn't be Ballard! BTW Glenn's installation looks a lot cleaner than mine, that's one advantage of having machine tools and being expert in their use. As I've said before, every single item I've received from Glenn's Mook Machine has been superb.

Gentlemens:

Thanks for the kind words.

Terry, the Ballard rimfire extractor is very good, perhaps the best of all the single shots, but difficult to do as a one time thing. For Ballard it was no big deal as they just made all the specialized tooling needed for the job.

Had I approached this in a different manner the set up would have been easier. I could have fit the blank before contouring it, and turned a straight section on the outside at the breech end. Then I would have had a OD parallel and concentric with the bore, making the mill set up easier. But that would have required an extra set up in the lathe. I reckon there is no free lunch. Still, I will try it that way next time.

In any event, here are a couple more pictures of the extractor as it is being fit.

Glenn,
Many thanks for the pictures of the 'Set Up's'. I've lost track of how many times I have had to explain to some people, that the setting up of a job prior to milling may take an hour or even two, and all to make one single cut that takes all of 10 seconds to do.

It's entirely different at the factory where mass production of the item was made. They would have a tool room made jig, that the part was simply just dropped into to enable the cut to be made. For the 'One Off' job it's not worth spending perhaps a day or two making a jig, that you may never need again.

Here are couple three more pictures of the new extractor installed and working. It is a lot of messing around but it works very well. Foolproof extraction with no possibility of getting the case head behind the extractor.
