http://midamericarecreation.com/This gun has been on GB for a very long time. Take a good look. The checkering and engraving are not well done. I called Mid America months ago. I was not impressed. From what I could gather, it is a 1 man operation. If you want a new gun, go with CPA. http://www.singleshotrifles.com/Pete

Mid-America states on their website that their parts will interchange with originals. If their quality is up to snuff, that would be a very welcome additional source. It appears they do not do the correct type of color case hardening. That's a shame since finding someone to do the correct type and pattern is hard to find.
By the way, if you are willing to accept unfinished stocks, you can come by a CPA at a reasonable cost. Phil

I believe CPA's case colors and patterns are in the original factory style. I know that their other Stevens features pretty much duplicate the original Stevens factory fit and finish levels, i.e., I was underwhelmed. If you must have a Stevens then CPAs are stronger and more versatile than the originals because they use a larger barrel thread shank size. Regards, Joe

I know nothing about CPA quality, or the quality of work on this gun. What I do know is that a similar CPA, or original Stevens will run you much more than the $1,800 that this auction is at now. The stock work may not be perfect, but it's much better than I can do. The engraving is not at par with some originals, or what guys like Ken can do, but again it's better than I can do. Overall the gun has a nice look to it, and will certainly go a bit higher before the auction ends, IMHO. And white line spacers are for new guns, not classic repros, or originals.

Set-Trigger- Yes, the white line spacers were a joke. Sometime back, I joked with Mr. Fewless about one of his works of art posted on the double gun forum. The stock was as perfect as your first love so I teased him about an imaginary flaw.
mc- I taught myself to build a stock and read every thing I could get my hands on to try to learn about fit and finish. Someone, Jim Carmichale IIRC, said to always stock the wood a little proud to allow for shrinkage and future refinishing. Nothing wrong with wood a little proud but the height of the wood over metal should be even from top to bottom- which this isn't. Proud metal is a different story. It shows sloppy workmanship. This contraption has both unevenly proud wood and proud metal.
I'll shut up now and heed the opinions of my betters.
Cary

But Mr. Steele, How do you really feel about Stevens rifles? Glenn

FWIW, a recently CPA that a friend ordered came with case colors but no other wood or metal finishing, no engraving, decent but not exhibition wood and it cost just north of $3000. It was not as nice as this rifle. Not even close.
I agree it ain't perfect, but it's $1800.
That engraving is odd...

Glenn, you already know and the rest of these fine folks don't wanta hear it. CPAs are OK, but then again so is a Remchester...I like walls and Cadets and Borchardts and would like a Hagn if I could afford one. Why, I even like Rugers, what more could you ask? Regards, Joe
