Saw this listing on Gunbroker, and from the description it seems CPA has competition? Or am I missing something? Was this prior to CPA existing?http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=118494510

Hi Kutter --- never handled one myself BUT, Been told the workmanship isn't up to CPA standards --- have worked on a number of CPA guns and have a new one just in from the fact.

OK custom gun and single shot experts, what am I missing on this gun? I'm not a gunsmith, not a collector and certainly no expert but I see an awfull lot of reasons this gun isn't an $1800.00 gun.
The stock work looks amaturish and the barrel looks to have been relined, which is not mentioned in the description. Am I being too critical or do others see the same? Is $1800.00 a fair price for a gun that looks like this?

 Last, who is CPA?

 TIA, Cary

PS: You'd think if they're going to price it that high, they could have spent the extra $3.00 and included white line spacers.

What's amaturish about that stock? I'm not really sure that amaturish might mean, but the stock looks fine to me. Don't much care for CPAs or any other Stevens, but that is just a personal preference.
"...workmanship isn't up to CPA standards" ???

I would not rate CPA's standards all that high and this one looks about par for the course or better. At least to me.

Brent- As I said, I'm neither a gunsmith nor an expert but I've stocked enough rifles and shotguns to know when it's done right and when it's not. I paid for my moose hunting addiction for nine years stocking guns. I considered myself ok but not on the level I'd consider worthy of the title "custom stocker". My saving graces were that I was cheap and fast. This rifle would not have left the bench.
 Problems I see are:

 1) The wood to metal fit is sloppy- large gap between rear of frame and wood on right side. Metal is proud of wood, same area.

 2) Forend wood is proud of frame at top, right side.

 3) Large gap at rear of upper tang. Tang damaged but not repaired (filed smooth).

 4) Cross over lines at top of grip sloppy, checkering not carried to corner of pattern.

 5) Lower tang proud of wood of wood at bottom, wood proud of tang at upper end.

 6) Could be the photography but left side of grip checkering seems to have such over runs that even that corn furrow of a border can't hide them.

Again, maybe I'm being too critical but I wouldn't pay $1800.00 for this gun. Besides, there are no white line spacers.

Let me know what you think- good or bad.

 Thanks, Cary

Well, I agree it is far from perfect, but it is a whole bunch better than CPA and at considerably less cost.

Brent, I stated that the quality wasn't up to CPA standards --- An old smith I knew had worked on a Mid-America and told me there was a difference in quality --- FWIW. The CPA stocker is retired from G&H.
