I wipe it down after a day or so. It leaves a very thin coat still on it. The stuff dries so slow you can still go back another day later and still rub it down with a soft cloth and pick up some of the oil on the surface. I then follow it up with what ever is the oil/grease preservative coating of the day and continue with that as normal maint. I guess looking at it now,,it's just my way of letting the freshly rust blued parts sit for a while before getting any real oil on them.

M/L barrels used to be coated with linseed or even wax after the last coating. Browning coatings can be a little coarser and will hold some of the wax or linseed better and they probably were happy if it hardened up on the metal. A very thin coating of a varnish wasn't all that uncommon at one time either, even on some blued parts.
