I recently purchased an English Walnut blank that is planned to be going on a 12-ga. A.H. Fox that will be stocked with a straight grip, the action back will be scalloped and frame rebated. I could use a little help in choosing which way to lay it out. I have labeled them Layout 1 and Layout 2...which one would you choose if you were making the decision?

Layout 1 left side:

Either will work. I prefer No 2.

Grain in the wrist area looks better in #2 from my angle. Teh straighter I can get it in the wrist the happier that I am most times. Still has great figure either way.

I have to agree with John, the wrist grain looks like it would be "stonger" in #2. It matters not how perfect the figure is if it is a broke stock...I know I have a couple I have cried over!

Layout #1 looks a tad more likely to crack with the grain from recoil forces on the left side of the tang, so I'd go with #2. Either would probably be OK with close fitting, but why tempt fate with such a nice chunk of wood.
