Here's some photos of the Colt damsascus sample barrel. The letter says that there are 4 different types of damascus in it. I see 1 type of damascus with 1 section having been twisted more turns per inch than the other. And 1 type of twist again 1 section having been twisted more turns per inch than the other.

They probably hammered that one Friday before they headed to the local pub...or possibly Saturday morning after a rough night at the pub.

Mike: the top is 2 Iron Crolle', Damas Anglais, English Two Rod, Hufnagel, or 'Oxford'
The middle is 3 Iron as above
The bottom is of course Twist

I'm thinking this was probably a Salesman's Sample Rod for the 1878 hammer gun rather than the 1883 hammerless, which had nicer damascus
