Not quite Ny and almost-as-good but I got out in Northern NJ with a friend, sans dog, and we FINALLY managed to find our limit of woodcock a coupel times. They were mostly in the THICK thorns and we each gave at least a pint of blood to the effort.
We did get reports of a few grouse in the area and managed to wild flush one but didn't connect with any.
I got good reports from a friend in NE Pa on both woodcock and Grouse.

Hi Brian, Stay safe and thanks again for your and your troops service to our country. This is the best season that I have seen in NYS for the Ruffed Grouse, atleast in my area. On a recent trip four of us got 30 RG and 7 woodcock flushes in about 4 hours. Of course you need good covers to hunt. This was not one of the better woodcock years for me only saw a handful. Unfortunately I have not gotten out as much as I would like, but I have a friend who got out on one afternoon and had 14 flushes in 45 mins, quite spectacular. No matter how many you flush they are always a challenge to bring to hand. It is certainly my favorite game bird. Challenging rarely getting a clean shot, lightening fast and turn on a dime. Always a trophy and great eating too. I did not take any photos this year but am attaching a pair from a previous couple of hunts. Live long and strong, Jeff G. I'd be happy to take you to a few of my covers next year not too far from your home.

Bbbbbrrrrrrrr. Like Jeff, I'm finding the number of grouse out there is high. Last weekend I had 8 flushes before I was frozen, with one really easy shot missed, and the rest of the flushes only heard. I'm hunting dogless for the time in 12 years and it's hard to put it all together and bring a bird home. Today in R'ville

Hey Brian, I was thinking about throwing a 'grouse post' up for you this weekend and wasn't sure how you would feel about it. I've never hunted in NY, but I'll send you some poor photos of some midwest scenery if you provide an email address. I'll try to come up with a few each day till you say 'go away'. Thanks, Rick.

Hi Brian, I got a late start and had a short season, but the numbers were good. For 17 hunts (40-60 minutes each) in the southwest and northcentral combined, only one failed to produce flushes. I've never hunted birds in your neck of the woods....I'd think about coverin' for ya, but you'll be home next season! Here's a pretty redphase cockbird from the southern tier.

Mike, Nice bird. I haven't heard of many grouse seen in Alleghany county. I would guess you are a little to the east. Friends hunted Tug Hill this year and did well. It was a short season and now there is too much snow for the dogs. We had good woodcock numbers again this year. I'm thinking of heading east to try a few places on public land if there isn't too much snow after the New Year. Chris

I don't think Mike has taken it out. I don't see any scratches on it! Nice hunk of wood. Chris

None of mine are too pretty to hunt....then they all get a little touch up in February. Funny how bird hunting works. Two of my buddies are really dedicated NY grouse hunters, but with opposite styles. One is a Springer guy and hunts coverts all over the state. One day he leaves home and drives 150 miles in one direction, 150 miles the opposite direction a couple days later, then . The other is a Setter guy with a permanent camp in the southern tier and hunts every square inch of just a couple of counties. Both have kept journals for 30 years. They agreed that last year was the absolute rock bottom for woodcock...worst in 30 years. This year, the Springer guy said woodcock was "pretty good," the Setter guy says it was his best in 30 years! something like 130 flushes. Both of them said grouse was so-so. I've flushed 11 woodcock in 2 seasons. Killed more grouse last year than I had woodcock flushes. Overall, grouse have been steady for me for the last 3 seasons while woodcock have declined dramatically. I'm sure there are plenty of NY hunters that will tell you the opposite.
