Drilling Fortuna-Sauer circa 1974, 2x16G + 6,5x57R About 2 1/2" from muzzle on rifled bbl there is allmost invisible bulge (visible only by shadows) as result of stuck bullet and late tries to knock bullet out by hammer and ramrod. Target paper shows about 2" at 100 yards from 6 rounds. The seller wants $1800.00 for it including S&B 6x42 scope. Any suggestions?

Buy it and use it as is. 2" at 100 is good enough for hunting purposes. Good luck.

Geno- How are things in Russia? I first thought you were a "Goombah" with Geno-didn't realize this inter-net thingy was international in scope. First off, a good friend has several kraut drillings- Vierlings Ja?- and even with the bulge about 2 and 1/2" back from the muzzle, that is very good accuracy for a drilling-the connection to the above pair of 16 gauge barrels precludes the accuracy of a glas-bedded BA Mauser 98 BA with a Hart or Shilen barreled rifle, and that close to the muzzle the pressure curve has dropped- I'd have a gunsmith check the lands and grooves- if the Kraut 3-hole has Krupp Fluss Hall barrels, or even Swede Bofors Steel- you have the best- and the Schmidt Und Bendor-over scopes are in the same quality and price as the Kraut Zeiss- If you like the "bastard gauge 16" and it shoots like that-let's face it- a 50 yard shot at a boar in the woods of Translvania or Lithuania (home ground for Hannibal Lecter) and you are off 1" at 50/ or 2" at 100 as you stated-if you shoot for the "boiler room" with the proper bullet- dead boar-Go for it-and enjoy!!

2" sounds OK to me. Perhaps accuracy could be improved with a different load?

If this were available here I'd snap it up in a heartbeat bulge and all. I don't see any problem or safety issues shooting this double with a bulge as described. Jim

On target it looks like heating bbl problem. I think 6 shots from 1 bbl are too much for doubles, drillings, vierling etc. (it's in cm. not inches)

Did you shoot the target yourself or did the seller just show you a target? If the latter, it may shoot better than the target suggests.
In any case I'd buy it in a heartbeat, 2" is fine for hunting, the S&B alone retails for over $1000.

the S&B alone retails for over $1000. It made me think, what if something wrong with scope also? Broken scope plus drilling with bulged bbl. That's too much for one gun. I need to check it out seven times before final decision.

Sounds like someone stuck the muzzle in the mud or snow and blasted away. I've had several rifles with bulged barrels some were undetectable until you pushed a tight patch thru and you could feel it slip. Most of them shot quite well. I'd buy it!!

No, Ken, it happened in police ballistic labotory and unfortunatly it happens from time to time. Experts from police decrease powder in ammo trying to get shot bullet with minimum defects, but with very good visible traces from rifling. As result bullet sticks in bbl. These idiots like to shoot second time trying to get the stuck bullet or to use rod and hammer without drilling hole in stuck bullet first. I heard about at least 4 the same cases.

Geno,
Wow!! those guys must have a death wish! You might check the warranty available on the S&B scope. If broken they may repair for little or no charge even if your not the original owner.
Regards, Ken

Remember rifle barrels on drillings are thin, thin, thin. It's definitely possible.

Hey Geno
Whatever happened to that wild boar web cam in Estonia? It doesn't work for me anymore. Did they move it or did it just go down?

Geno, I think I would buy it. The gun looks great and if the targets shown reflect its accuracy, thats sure good enough. I have a Win Model 70, in 375 H&H, one of my Dads guns, that has a slight bulge about the same place. I have no idea how long it has been there, and wouldnt have known had not some "expert" pointed it out to me. It is a good rifle , we have used it for about everything all over the world. I am not going to worry about it, nor should you...

Would you have bought the model 70 knowing it was bulged ?

Is that about 50mm at 100m with six shots? If that's so it's pretty impressive for gun of this type. My 9.3x62 does a bit better, but that is Mauser type bolt gun.

No, I certainly would not want to send something generating 340 to 380MPa in the chamber down even slightly bulged rifled tube. After all having confidence in equipment I use counts for a lot.

jOe the answer to your question is ,most likely yes. If It shot as well as it does today, and the price was fair, and I wanted it, yes. I dont buy guns for display, I shoot em all. I dont know if my Dad knew it was bulged, if he did , he didnt care...Bulged rifle bbls can be compensated for by standing the bullet on end, striking it sharply with a hammer until the bullet shape matches the bbl. How about that?

If the accuracy is real, the bulged barrel didn't bother me, and I really liked the gun, I'd buy it but not before some price negotiation. However,,If the damage in the rifle barrel is going to bother you at all in any way,,,then just walk away from the gun. If nothing short of a perfect rifle bore will satisfy you, don't trouble yourself with the gun. It's not worth buying and then trying to figure a way of making it right.
