This is the best season that I have seen in NYS for the Ruffed Grouse, atleast in my area. On a recent trip four of us got 30 RG and 7 woodcock flushes in about 4 hours. Of course you need good covers to hunt. This was not one of the better woodcock years for me only saw a handful. Unfortunately I have not gotten out as much as I would like, but I have a friend who got out on one afternoon and had 14 flushes in 45 mins, quite spectacular. No matter how many you flush they are always a challenge to bring to hand. It is certainly my favorite game bird. Challenging rarely getting a clean shot, lightening fast and turn on a dime. Always a trophy and great eating too.
