Well said Sir- Where in "Bama? Had a buddy from Opelika- just a few clicks North of Phenix City, right across the river from Ft. Benning-Raimey great old line Southern name- when I saw the ellenbr on your sign in thingy- I though- Oh Shucks- some woman commenting on guns and other items that are a man's world ONLY. Ladies' and Gents' auction most likely reflects the traditional Southern Gentility toward the "Fairer Sex" RWTF

OWD it's against the law to sell out of proof guns in Britian. At auction or anywhere else. Thats why you see "stock, action and forearm only" lots. Yes they have the barrels but when they sell them they have to grind holes in them or cut them off or not sell the barrels with the action at all.

Mike-

I'm not sure how the laws are written in the UK, but the auction houses used to sell out-of-proof guns in tact to American dealers.

The auction houses started chopping the bbls because American dealers were buying up out-of-proof guns in the UK and selling them over here.

And remember, it's illegal to sell to out-of-proof guns in the UK. But who says you can't export them to the US and sell them over here?

OWD

Joe: How's your 311 collection coming along? That's the same old song you sang last year. I think a few of us are getting a little tired of hearing it. Have you seen any of my 300+ (down to a little over 200 now) clunkers? Even a 311 collector should be able to recognize the names: Churchill, Westley Richards, Parker Bros., A.H. Fox, Lefever, L.C. Smith, Baker, Cogswell & Harrison, Sig-Rizzini, etc. You may have never owned one but you can take-to-task those of us that do. I imagine your 311s move the compass needle along pretty good as well.

Raimey is a little off base when he assumes that I am trying to run Charleton Hall out of business. I just want to be able to get some idea what a gun is before driving to South Carolina. When I get an auction catalog or look at one on the internet, I usually learn enough from the descriptions to find a short list of guns I would be interested in and read past the rest. I can't do that with the Charleton catalog. There isn't enough information there. Diggory is a fine fellow as is George, and I want them to succeed. As far as "saying it to their faces", George is right here on this thread and he knows who I am. Diggory also reads this thread and is free to respond.

Bill: Please come on down. Maryland ain't that far away. I know 'cause we just drove to the Vintager's a couple months ago. As I said before this is just Charlton Hall's second time around and I'll bet you that this one will exceed the first. Dig & I are not going to be there to snap up all the bargains. We both have a few guns consigned and are offering our services gratis. There are already several hundred bidders registered. Try to imagine that this auction were at a place very near you would you feel the same way or would you be doing your utmost to make it a success? You just can't put every last detail in the catalogue. No other auction does. That's what telephones and e-mail are for. I sincerely wish you would come. There are two eighbores in the sale.

Best Regards, George

OWD as I said the auction house is held to the same laws as everyone else. If caught selling an out of proof gun they face the same punishment as a dealer. If an auction house sold OOP guns to a U.S. citizen they still broke the law. Which auction was it?

Raimey: To quote Foxy: "Well said Sir". You hit the nail on the head. I think it was Thumper's mom in Bambi that said: "If you can't say something nice about somebody, just don't say anything at all". It's too easy to criticize someone else's efforts when you're unwilling to put forth effort yourself. You were at Charlton last year and I'm sure that you will agree that we all had a great time and we didn't have to buy plane tickets & hotel rooms in England. I'm looking forward to seeing you again. If you need for me to reserve your room or anything else please let me know. I'll be there Wednesday, Thursday & Friday & Dig will be there Thursday & Friday for the previews.

Best Regards, George

George I was joking about the compass needle....Everyone knows most people use GPS's these days.

I wish I could attend and I hope the auction is a great success.

I guess I'll just stay hOme and polish my 311's.

Sitting at home polishing your weapon; now Joe, this as a hobby of yours that will surprise few on this forum

Raimey, very nicely put sentiments. My own view is that the lots are described in as much detail as any UK auction house - bore and wall sizes will be available in the room and conditon reports by phone upon request.

Just to put the record straight - I have no guns (zero) in this sale. I am acting as a consultant and am there to help if I can.

As for bargains, who knows. A chap walked out of the last sale with a Lincoln Jeffries Jr 30" damascus barrelled 16-bore for $600. It was tight, clean and measured well. I know for a fact that it was cleaned and re-jointed prior to the sale at a cost of $560. I'd say that was a very good buy. Another chap took away a very nice, cased Atkin sidelock for $5000. Try and find one like that in a gunshop anytime soon.

Like all auctions, some stuff sells strongly because a number of people want it, other stuff can be a bargain as it has to sell on the day. You have to be in it to win it.

I'm looking forward to meeting a few faces again this year and getting the friendly welcome I am becoming accustomed to in the South - and grits for breakfast!
