George L.:
Did McPhail change his mind on going to Louisville or is he just attending Friday? Yeah, the Prussian Diamond Daly, and from the pics there looks to be a couple Treff action drillings with one's rifle barrel bored to 0.410" and reproved(British?) along with the E. Blancke 12 bore on the C.H. Daw patent/action. A diverse lot for sure.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

I emailed a bunch of questions about a Westley Richards boxlock. Never heard back from the folks. It's amazing what you can leave out of a gun description, too. This is the gun: http://www.charltonhallauctions.com/asp/...0&saletype=Questions: Bbls: Any pitting? Any dents, dings, or bulges? Bbl wall & bore measurements? What was it originally proofed for? Wood: Any splits or cracks? Has it been refinished? Has the checkering been recut? Overall: Ejectors or extractors? Do all the serial #s match? Is the gun tight and on the face? Anything broken or not working - triggers, cocking mechanism, worn sears (light trigger pulls) safety, etc? Thanks OWD

Auction catalogues generally restrict themselves to describing what is visible and apparent.
I will be in the viewing room on the Thursday and Friday and will happily talk you through the gun on the phone with it in my hand if you want to call Charlton Hall and ask for me.
best,
DH

Obsessed With Doubles- t of questions- now if the late Charlton Heston were still involved instead of his brother-in-law Charlton Hall-you'd get the answers in spades. Looks a bit like a LeFever top bolt from the foto-Wonder how the high end gun market will hold up if the Senate and the House tell the "gurus" of GM-dumb to go "blow it out their barracks bags" as they should. Ain't no man worth $22million annual salary- with a golden 'chute and a platinum D-bag to contain it in- HALO everybody HALO- we have a el biggo wake-up call a coming. I know of some Smith Grade 2 and 2E's believe most are 12- DT, not sure on grips-maybe a 16-if you want, I'll do you a "recee run" and let you know. Jawja- on my mind-and my name ain't Oglethorpe neither- sommers near Columbus -SW sector..

It was interesting to see Christies in November struggle a bit but sell some notable pieces of good, honest kit.
Bonham's made some good results on December 3rd. Good guns are selling strongly. Very expensive collector, 'exhibition', vanity projects covered with gold and bling and asking prices in the £50,000 - £200,000+++ bracket are getting left alone. Tatty stuff of mediocre quality is not selling fast.

The Carolina Vintagers have their Eighth Annual Fall Shoot at Hunting Creek Preserves in Harmony, NC also on Dec 13th. Shoot begins at 10:00am, so, unfortunately, none of us will be able to make it. We'll have to try and avoid a scheduling conflict next year. It would have made a nice outing from Charlotte to Columbia for the day.

A bit improved from the first one but..
Some condition descriptions would certainly help the absentee buyer.Very few lots have them most don't even provide basic info like choke, chamber,DAH for instance.
Once again better pics would help, they are improved a bit but not close to the ones at the gun auction houses.

Dave, you might as well get used to Obama, he is our Prez. It's like when your football team gets a new quarterback, you might as well root for him cause nobody else is going to lead the offense into the endzone. (I was for Mc Cain also just for the record)

Dave: If you will e-mail Charlton Hall with your specific questions on specific lots they will try to get your questions answered prior to the auction. I was there today & answered some that had been sent in. You can only get so much info in the catalogue. I thought the pictures this year were as good as any I've seen in the major gun auctions and better than some.

Small Bore-
I appreciate your offer.
Do you know if the guns are being sold with No Reserve?
BTW: as you know it's what you can't just see that matters. All the UK houses provide bore/wall measurements. So does Julia - probably the most successful gun auctioneer in the US.
Thanks

Thanks OWD From the description....Quote: "This is a very nicely scroll-engraved Westley Richards boxlock, built as in the original Anson & Deeley patent, with a bolted top-lever and doll's head and without Purdey under-bolts." Is top lever and dolls head the only lock up on this gun ?

Yup - that's the original Anson & Deeley patent. That's why the action looks so sleek and trim. There's only one lump coming off the bbls.
Later on Westley added the double lumps and Purdey-style. This made the actions squarer, though.

I guess that's an example of the claim that you could hold the barrels shut with one finger when you fire a SxS.

I went to the Charlton Hall auction last year and will not go this year. I find that the owner of the auction is a nice person, he knows almost zero about guns. He has some very nice furniture and art to sell during the remainder of the year and he has excellent knowlege of art and furniture. It was a nice venue and was an excellent opporunity to meet old friends and make new ones, but that was about the whole value of the auction to me.
My take on the photos this year is that they are not as good as last year. The descriptions of the guns are so so, such as the Remington 1100 "pump action".
There were hardly any bargains there last year and I expect less this year. Sellers paying sellers premium of 15% as well as paying insurance premiums while the guns are at Charlton Hall; and futher buyers paying 15% buyers premium does not leave much room for bargains. Sure as George notes there are some guns of prestige there, however you can drive 175 miles west of Columbia, SC to Philip Futrill's shop in NC and see many times more best quality English guns than you will see at Charlton Hall and buy them for less money.
Small Bore had a Purdey non-ejector at Charlton Hall last year for sale (I think it was the same Purdey as he wrote about in one of the English shooting magazines--that rivelled the barrels on the first attempt at re-proof for him at London Proof House) and it brought $13,000.00. This was $1,000.00 more than I though it would bring retail, however it was a nice old Purdey, and I hope that Small Bore sells more guns this year. I suspect, however he does not have to pay the 15% sellers premiumn, or at least he should not have to as he is the main draw to the auction.
There was a nice Stephen Grant there also and a nice pair of Purdey's--neither the Grant or Purdey's met reserve, I believe. I also seemed to remember that Small Bore at a good Lang SLE there last year. I do not recall if it brought minimum--or even if it has a reserve.
Now with the US$ at $1.46/UKPound Sterling the tables have turned as the USdollar was $2.00 to the pound at last year's auction. If Gordon Brown continues borrowing money to support the UK economy, we will see the US$ at $1.25 to the pound soon(it was $1.45 yesterday).
I saw several nice old Purdey's and Boss's a couple of weeks ago while I was in London. I may buy one soon as the Pound slips. I would have been better off to have taken some of my 401K out in August and bought several new Purdey's. As it is my 401K is now a 201K.
Good luck to all of you that may go to Charlton Hall. It was fun watching the activities there.

The first preview was this afternoon and was very well attended. The layout on the auction floor is beautiful and the quality and diversity of the offerings is better that last year. There have been some late additions that won't appear in the catalogue. Dig is coming in Wednesday and the Friday evening social and Q&A session is from 5-7 P.M. and is close to being filled.
Phillip's Mid South Guns is northeast of Columbia in Wagram, NC just over 100 miles from Columbia. I was told that he plans to be at Charlton Hall Friday & Saturday. He does have an amazing inventory at fair prices that I am sure that he would like to add to. I hope he makes it down.
Ron Long, the owner & auctioneer, would be the first to tell you that guns are not his expertise which is why Diggory & I are involved. We also seek help from Jim Kelly at Darlington Gun Works & other knowledgeable gun people. The sales charges both ways are in line with other auction houses. Some lots will have a reserve & some will not. Many of us don't have the opportunity to travel to England and it is great to have an English style gun auction close by in the U.S. I expect there to be some real bargains in this one. We'll see!

The descriptions of the first two guns in the catalog were enough to tell me that I was not going to be able to tell from the catalog descriptions which guns I would be remotely interested in. There are lots of words used to tell us what we can tell from the pictures and little about what the pictures don't tell us. A good percentage of the description is a synopsis of the history of the company that made the gun, something bidders already know. The pictures don't add much either. Diggory, if you and George sell a few guns and snap up a few dozen more consignment guns that don't make reserve, the sale will be a success, for two of you, and maybe the auction house. However, that leaves out a bunch of the rest of us. Kind of like the automobile bailout. I'm hardly ever this negative but among name gun auctions, this is not one of my favorites. I would love to be able to attend the inspection, but the catalog doesn't give me enough information to bother to get in the car.

This info was added to the lot I'm interested in:
"Minor pitting inside barrels; exterior has no dents, minor scratches. Wall is 30.+ on both barrels; no load information available, stamped ''Not for Ball.'' Original color left except at the forend where the hand holds the barrel; no cracks or splits in wood. Gun is an extractor, all serial numbers match. Straight grip is original, with re-cut checkering; wood is lovely. Gun works perfectly, has auto-safety; tight and all appears to be original. Gun is No. 2 of a pair with engraving of a gundog on the trigger guard, oval has crest with ''Pro Patria.''"
Not bad. I appreciate the info. But the bore sizes and original proofing info is missing so I still don't know if the gun is in proof or wildly out of proof.
Minor pitting could mean really bad pitting that someone honed out, putting the gun out of proof.
BTW: a while ago there was a dealer in the US who bought out-of-proof guns at UK auctions and imported them into the US. He would sell them as OK guns to an ignorant American market. It was a great way to make a lot of cash.

Negative, negative, negative…..
As I’ve said before, it is so easy to decry from afar. My mother has always said about a meal, which you have put your feet under their table to partake and that someone has put forth an honest effort in preparation, and my wife about comments in general, if you can’t say something nice or constructive about something or someone, don’t say anything at all or even open your mouth. This denouncement of Charlton Hall is something akin to the left wing effort to kill gunshows. Bushveld’s comments are warranted is his attendance and support and I hope Charlton Hall has noted it’s shortcomings in the 1st event and as George notes, has possible put corrections in place to rectify the situation. Apparently Bushveld has insight or other means available for purchase that others may not have. If you have issues such as the description, photos, etc., either pen Ron a letter or better yet offer your services if you are some what of a photog or speech writer. If he/they refuse, then you have made an effort to support the event. I was always taught that if you had anything to say, say it to someone’s face. So show-up, make an effort and voice your concerns in person, i.e., if you don't make an effort or support it, you don't have grounds to complain. There seems to be dissention in the ranks and NO ONE but us gun owners/collectors are going to support such an effort which will lead to its success. If you want to start a “Sink the Charlton Hall Gun Auction” fund, feel free to do so, but hang out your own shingle and put the tirade in the basement in the opinion section where it belongs. I don’t have any interest in Charlton Hall, nor are any of the folk involved my clients, including George L., nor am I related. I receive no kick-backs. I haven’t purchased anything from George L. nor have I been offered any special discount that he hasn’t offered to anyone else. I am self employed and operate my own business. And in addition to travel costs I am away from my business, but I consider it worth the effort. I look forward to meeting one and all and see your support whether by attendance, purchase or by voicing your concerns.
Kind Regards,
Raimey S. Ellenburg

Well said Sir- Where in "Bama? Had a buddy from Opelika- just a few clicks North of Phenix City, right across the river from Ft. Benning-Raimey great old line Southern name- when I saw the ellenbr on your sign in thingy- I though- Oh Shucks- some woman commenting on guns and other items that are a man's world ONLY. Ladies' and Gents' auction most likely reflects the traditional Southern Gentility toward the "Fairer Sex" RWTF

OWD it's against the law to sell out of proof guns in Britian. At auction or anywhere else. Thats why you see "stock, action and forearm only" lots. Yes they have the barrels but when they sell them they have to grind holes in them or cut them off or not sell the barrels with the action at all.

Mike-
I'm not sure how the laws are written in the UK, but the auction houses used to sell out-of-proof guns in tact to American dealers.
The auction houses started chopping the bbls because American dealers were buying up out-of-proof guns in the UK and selling them over here.
And remember, it's illegal to sell to out-of-proof guns in the UK. But who says you can't export them to the US and sell them over here?

Joe: How's your 311 collection coming along? That's the same old song you sang last year. I think a few of us are getting a little tired of hearing it. Have you seen any of my 300+ (down to a little over 200 now) clunkers? Even a 311 collector should be able to recognize the names: Churchill, Westley Richards, Parker Bros., A.H. Fox, Lefever, L.C. Smith, Baker, Cogswell & Harrison, Sig-Rizzini, etc. You may have never owned one but you can take-to-task those of us that do. I imagine your 311s move the compass needle along pretty good as well.

Raimey is a little off base when he assumes that I am trying to run Charleton Hall out of business. I just want to be able to get some idea what a gun is before driving to South Carolina. When I get an auction catalog or look at one on the internet, I usually learn enough from the descriptions to find a short list of guns I would be interested in and read past the rest. I can't do that with the Charleton catalog. There isn't enough information there. Diggory is a fine fellow as is George, and I want them to succeed. As far as "saying it to their faces", George is right here on this thread and he knows who I am. Diggory also reads this thread and is free to respond.

As I said before this is just Charlton Hall's second time around and I'll bet you that this one will exceed the first. Dig & I are not going to be there to snap up all the bargains. We both have a few guns consigned and are offering our services gratis. There are already several hundred bidders registered. Try to imagine that this auction were at a place very near you would you feel the same way or would you be doing your utmost to make it a success? You just can't put every last detail in the catalogue. No other auction does. That's what telephones and e-mail are for. I sincerely wish you would come. There are two eighbores in the sale.
Best Regards, George

OWD as I said the auction house is held to the same laws as everyone else. If caught selling an out of proof gun they face the same punishment as a dealer. If an auction house sold OOP guns to a U.S. citizen they still broke the law. Which auction was it?

Raimey: To quote Foxy: "Well said Sir". You hit the nail on the head. I think it was Thumper's mom in Bambi that said: "If you can't say something nice about somebody, just don't say anything at all". It's too easy to criticize someone else's efforts when you're unwilling to put forth effort yourself. You were at Charlton last year and I'm sure that you will agree that we all had a great time and we didn't have to buy plane tickets & hotel rooms in England. I'm looking forward to seeing you again. If you need for me to reserve your room or anything else please let me know. I'll be there Wednesday, Thursday & Friday & Dig will be there Thursday & Friday for the previews.
Best Regards, George

Just My Thoughts, George George I was joking about the compass needle....Everyone knows most people use GPS's these days. I wish I could attend and I hope the auction is a great success. I guess I'll just stay hOme and polish my 311's.

Sitting at home polishing your weapon; now Joe, this as a hobby of yours that will surprise few on this forum Raimey, very nicely put sentiments. My own view is that the lots are described in as much detail as any UK auction house - bore and wall sizes will be available in the room and conditon reports by phone upon request. Just to put the record straight - I have no guns (zero) in this sale. I am acting as a consultant and am there to help if I can. As for bargains, who knows. A chap walked out of the last sale with a Lincoln Jeffries Jr 30" damascus barrelled 16-bore for $600. It was tight, clean and measured well. I know for a fact that it was cleaned and re-jointed prior to the sale at a cost of $560. I'd say that was a very good buy. Another chap took away a very nice, cased Atkin sidelock for $5000. Try and find one like that in a gunshop anytime soon. Like all auctions, some stuff sells strongly because a number of people want it, other stuff can be a bargain as it has to sell on the day. You have to be in it to win it. I'm looking forward to meeting a few faces again this year and getting the friendly welcome I am becoming accustomed to in the South - and grits for breakfast!

Brit guns for export do not need to be in proof. I've seen some Brittish clunkers that couldn't be used as a bong muchless than a sporting arm.

Run With the Fox:
Sorry to dissappoint you but I'm not a Southern Bell. Logon/entry stims from 7-8 character limit at a time when Fortran was King, assembly and Unix were the work-horses when the internet was in its infancy just after the copper punch-card plates. My parents wanted me to sign and seal with a unique first name which originated from a drive-in movie theatre picture show in Mobile, Alabama in the mid to late 1960s. Ellenburg appears to be Anglicized from the Eichelberger folk who got off the boat on the Carolina Coast in the late 18th Century pressing West to take advantage of land patents offered to pay war debt. Taking with them a well founded power systems(hydro & mechanical) knowledge in addition to selling corn by the gallon instead of by the bushel around the Tennessee Valley Divide, just South(Southwest) of Decatur. I'm curious of your origin as from time to time I have to get out my secret cockney decoder cerealbox ring to decipher your posts. Were you a lad around the London gun trade?
eightbore:
I had no intent of singling you out and it was just a general comment on a thread that began as an announcement for an event of interest and in my view turned into a sink the "Charlton Hall Auction" ship. I may have been off-base and possibly way off base. But if I had directed it toward you I would at least refer to you by your stage name.
Also I note George L. as being connected to Charlton Hall but I have no evidence of that. When I have an inquiry I use him as a point of contact and always get a prompt response.
On a side note regarding the compass: if data was collected via a compass to pass ownership, such as a land conveyance, the only legal retracement means is that of the original/period instrument type and then remeasured along the retraced bearing with new/current technology.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

Wow! Everyone's playing nice now, including me, and the Charleton Hall auction is getting plenty of publicity if readers are devouring this thread. I wish Charlton Hall and George would put me on the payroll as catalog consultant and answerer of questions because I detest being around home in the period from mid-November to New Years. I also hate to use the telly to inquire about auction guns that interest me. I would much rather have my answers in the description. Good luck, and George, thanks for the invitation. Murphy

Hey Bill, Foxy, Mike, OWD, jOe, Dig, Stan & Raimey: Thanks for almost all of your input. Just as a side, Charlton Hall is presently located in what we call the Vista on Gervais Street (although they have bought property near the Columbia Metropolital Airport and plan to start construction on their new facility early next year). Gervais Street is right in the heart of where Genl. W.T. Sherman did his urban renewal project and still bears some of the scars from that event. For those of you who have never been to Columbia you should take this opportunity to come. here is a new Hampton Inn almost next door to Charlton Hall and loads of good restaurants in the Vista. If you plan to come please let me know so I can get you included for Friday Night with Dig.
Best Regards, George

This info was added to the lot I'm interested in:
"Minor pitting inside barrels; exterior has no dents, minor scratches. Wall is 30.+ on both barrels; no load information available, stamped ''Not for Ball.''
OWD "Minor pitting" to one guy can look like caverns to the next...I'm not against shooting guns with "minor pitting" I'm just not to inclined to purchase a gun with minor pitting unless it's at a give away price...Especially in a Damascus barreled gun. A gunsmith friend explained pitting like this to me....Look at 30 thousands on a caliper then look at 15 thousands then try and figure out how to measure the depth of "minor pitting". Most Sellers would have you believe that minor pitting is okay. it's not at top dollar prices. I'd rather have a "311" with clean barrels than a London gun with pitted barrels...because once the pitting starts it can't be stopped without polishing it completely out.

Regarding proof - it is illegal for a gun to change hands in teh UK for money or to be offered for sale if it is not in proof. the seller, not the buyer is the one who commits the offence.
In the past it was an informal practice for dealers (RFDs) and auctioneers to trasfer guns that were out of proof, within the Trade so they could be renovated.
Because some people started taking out-of-proof guns to the US to sell, this practice has been stamped on.
Auctioneers will not now release a gun for renovation if it is out of proof unless they cut the barrels first, making sleeving the only option. It makes no difference if the buyer is from the UK or overseas- the rule applies absolutely.
This has been widely publicised by the police and the Proof houses in the last 15 months or so.
Joe - the "will it make its estimate" question is one that can't be answered until it happens.

Example... If George L sent his 200 remaining SxS's back to England most would have thier barrels cut off... Lowell you might be onto something with your "bOng" theory.

SmallBore, not so long ago you Brits would sling together your crapped-out guns, like so much firewood and ship 'em over here. Put a flashlight down the barrel and you'd have a lightshow on your walls. Pitted would be an understatement ol'man! I've had a Brit single-shot rifle that had a "?" for cartridge - so don't tell me!

jOe: I tried being nice but that apparently won't work. First, to answer your questions: #2081 is a great gun with a lot of history some of which is contained in the Parker letter. #2087 is also a great gun that has been well used that also has a lot of history some of which is contained in the Parker letter PLUS it is a C GRADE HAMMERGUN! #2002 & #2017 We're talking about a Chrchill & a Hussey respectively & the Hussey is a two barrel set! If they wern't sleeved, yes, they would be worth more to a collector but not so much to a shooter who wants to shoot a fine gun(You probably wouldn't want to sleeve your 311s though). If I wanted to send my 200 guns back to England I could do pretty well now with the exchange rate but I'd rather sell them over here to people, unlike yourself, who can appreciate good workmanship and history. Who knows, in another 100 or so years your 311s will be classics! I REALLY LIKED HOW DIG REFERRED TO YOU POLISHING YOUR WEAPON! THAT WAS A GOOD ONE!
Best Regards, As Always, George

jOe: Now its 400? I wish! I said @ 200 & going for 100 +/_ What is a bong? Can you BANG a BONG? Is that what you do while polishing your weapon? Perhaps a BING would more be the case. I once waited by a Bilabong for Matilda to wattz with. Come on down out of them hills in Tennessee and be part of a real live English gun auction in South Carolina. It 'aint that fur! I'll even treat you to a Wild Turkey & water.

George you claimed to be down to 200 SxS's...do the math.
If you sent them back to England and they chopped all the barrels off there would 400 scrap pieces...2 x 200 = 400
Thus 400 potential bOng pipes according to Lowell.

Ah yes- almost time for White Christmas (written by a gent of the Hebrew persuasion, Irving Berlin already- go figure) guess he thought that "Grey Channuaka" wouldn't play in Peoria. Harry Lillis "Bing" crosby died in Sept 1977 whilst shooting partridges with his 12 bore Purdey- wonder who has that "escopeta" now? george, as you know the Limey guns so well, even better that Homely Joe knows his beloved 311's- any ideas??

Foxey: If I am not mistaken Bing's 20 bore Purdey was sold at one of Greg Martin's first auctions or perhaps while he was still at Bonham & Butterfields.
jOe: I'd say that if you pulled the BUNG from a cask of Wild Turkey and stand under the effluence thereof your BING would get a BANG out of that BONG! Seriously (or is it too late for that?) If any of my fine British guns were out of proof they would have been "cut by the auction" prior to the sale as a few of them were. Those were sold for "stock, action and fore-arm" only. I don't have any more, I'm sorry, but they wouldn't fit on your 311s anyway. I really haven't counted how many SxSs I have left but apparently you have, so how many are there? Bye the Bye the word is "scrap" not "scrape"

George I don't own any 311's.... Do you think it right to make fun of an American Work Horse Gun like the 311 with a stable full of wore out British Sway-backs like you had listed on Guns of America ?

There appeared recently in the British sporting Press a statement that carried the following message. Scotland Yard is pressuring the gun trade in the U.K.to refrain from exporting guns unless they meet the same pre-sale proof standards applicable in the U.K. The article went on to say; Scotland Yard was making this request because an accident involving an "out of proof"shotgun that was exported from England to the U.S.A. Regret, I could not trace the article, has anyone else knowledge of this situation?

jOe: I really don't know what kind of SxSs you own just as you don't have a clue as to what I own. Neither of us has ever seen the others collection, have we? Geo says that you have some fine Scotts who made wonderful guns. I have a few Greeners that I think are wonderful as well.
So let's call a truce, shake hands (via the internet) an commend each other on preserving some great English & American gun history. O.K.?
