A while back (like more than a year ago), there was a thread on the top forum on interesting engraving. I don't recall if I started it or not, but I posted some deeply incised gargoyle engraving that was striking - if a bit weird. In that thread were lots of other beautiful engravings, all of which contributed to increasing my interest in having a rifle engraved.

So, now I'm building a highwall (Winchester 1885, dst). Or rather someone is building most of it for me. If the timetable allows and Ken's dance card is not too full, I would like to have him do some engraving on this rifle. Nothing fancy, no critters, no gold, but some simple border and scroll (banknote?) work. I would love to see another thread of interesting, and perhaps unusual engravings to get some ideas together.

FWIW, the rifle will be a "thin side" action because that's what I like, but it has lots of flat space, so I don't know if bolt-action engravings are likely to be adaptable, but heck, throw them up there - I'm sure someone will be interested.

I dont have that gargoyle engraving to show again, but I do have one of Ken's (I think it is Ken's) low walls that I really like. So, I'll post that picture instead. I hope you don't mind Ken. Something like this I like quite a lot.

I'm proud to say that the little low wall was indeed engraved by Ken almost 10 years ago and is sitting in my safe right now. It has won some silhouette matches and accompanies me each Fall to the squirrel woods.

Here's some more Hurst engraving on the trap-door grip cap on my partially-finished low wall K-Hornet. The photo is poor but the spare firing pin can be seen peeping out of the trap cavity. The finish is a plating by I believe Metallife, it sets off the engraving quite well. Please notice the cute little knothole in the tree below the squirrel, it's not shown well in the photo but it adds a lot of character to the scene when viewed in person. As always, Kens' engraving is superb.

And the other examples of Ken's work shown above by Glenn are also superb. I especially like Ken's scrollwork but please notice his striking likeness of Glenn himself, the Mook Machine Mascot!(VBG)
Meant in jest and deep respect, Joe

BrentD,

If you have Steven Hughes' "Custom Rifles in Balck & Whihte", take a look at the '73 Winchester. I think that is an example of what you are talking about.

Another example was posted earlier on this forum under the "My Hepburn" heading - a Schoyen underlever conversion with engraving by Robert Swartley. Case colors are so vivid that the engraving does not display well - but it is spectacular.

mc - the high wall engraving is on a Griffin & Howe in R2 Lovell; Jos. Fugger engraved. I have the same pattern on one of their Farq.'s in .219 Zipper

Terry, I have a copy as a matter of fact. I will have to peruse it again. It has been a while.

I also had a copy of John Campbell's book, The Winchester SingleShot. Until two weeks ago when the puppy ate it...
Bummer.
