I wouldn't worry too much about the price of the woody bit if it's a one-time for Dad interest but learn from it if you happen to find your interest doesn't end with that. It's easy to happen onto a trap-door spider selling almost anything. A bit different from consumer-this-n-that as the stuff isn't in a big box on every corner and is always seldom seen at the very moment you want it but the answer is the same: comparison shopping and doing what you're doing--following the track of those who already found the cache.
