When the term chilled was first used there were two basic forms of shot known as Drop & Chilled. Both were dropped from a tower & both were Chilled by falling into a tank of water at the bottom. The difference was Drop shot was mostly pure lead & thus soft, while chilled had some alloy to make it harder. It was however not generally as hard as todays premium or magnum shot. To the best of my knowledge no-one makes the so called soft Drop shot anymore. Ordinary shot today would be in the Chilled category, which really has nothing to do with it's cooling.
