Hi all, I found this web forum and am wondering if I could get some help on restoring my father's Fox Sterlingworth please. It is an A grade, 16 gauge side by side with the serial numbers of 3704**. The last time he used it over 35 years ago, someone stepped out in front of him and he dropped it, losing the forend and forend iron. I purchased a forend and cannot find the forend iron anywhere. I have found a gunsmith that has a full machine shop and just needs a reference photo of what the iron would look like. I found a photo of a smiliar serial numbered Fox and it shows somewhat of the gun and forend: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3053/3064524308_c0a8b3e546.jpg?v=0 If anyone has a photo of a forend iron, I would be most appreciative! I am going to suprise my father for his 70th birthday in April, 20009 with his gun restored....

The 16 ga. graded guns (as in A,B,C) were all in the 200,000 S/N series; the Sterlingworth 16s in the 300,000 so it appears you do have a Sterlingworth. According to the year of production info this site, it would date to 1934--a Savage-produced Fox. I think it's probably the same snap-on iron either way. I've got a Philly SW 16. I'll pop the iron out of the forend tomorrow and take some pictures if outdoor light is good. In the meantime someone may come along who's already got a foto.
It's entirely possible that Bobby Brook (bbman3) might have an iron for a 16 or know where you can get one without fabricating it. Sometimes Foxes are parted out on eBay or GunBroker so another possibility there. Nice surprise for you dad!

Good idea! For that price, you could hardly go wrong, Jennifer.

If I remember correctly, I paid about 150 for the forend stock. I did check the fox collectors site but not Numrich's. Thanks for all of the information gentlemen! Dad will be shocked, that's for sure!

The serial number Jennifer mentions is in the 16 gauge Sterlingworth range. Jennifer, if it is over 350,000 and says Sterlingworth on it, it is not an A Grade, it is a Sterlingworth. Get back on the Fox Collectors site and someone should come up with a Sterlingworth iron for you. Post pictures of the gun so they will know whether your gun takes an extractor forend or an ejector forend. It is more likely an extractor forend. The serial number information given in an earlier post is, unfortunately, a bit off base.

Bill has shown me the error of my dates. The 16 ga. graded Foxes are in the 300,000 series as are the SWs, the demarcation for the 16 ga SWs being above 351,000. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy!

I am not sure, but I think a 20 gauge forend will also work in a 16 gauge Sterlingworth. Don't pay too much. You paid too much for your forend wood which may or may not work. Be careful.
