Hello,
Can anybody tell me if there is a way to restore removed rifling on a H&H double 8 paradox rifle? Does anybody know who would be able to do this?
Kind regards,
Huub.

Unfortunately, no. There are about 45 points of constriction in the paradox choke. If the rifling was completely removed there is no way to restore it. If the rifling has just lost some of its sharp edges with a good deal of "meat" to still catch and spin the bullet it may shoot effectively.
Holland 8 bores are pretty rare, even if it is now a "smooth bore" gun, it may shoot well to 75yds.

Thank you,
The rifling has been removed by some vandals in order to make it a shotgun instead of a rifle. This was the law in the UK at some time. I thought there might be a possibility of inserting steel replacement rifled bushings in the manner of rifled chokes.
Regards,
Huub

Huub,
Hmm. Expect everyone is right and there's not enough meat left to re-rifle as you've lost the choke. Maybe, just maybe, you could get a very capable gunsmith to TIG weld new metal at the choke and then rifle that. You are far enough from the breech that pressures should be low enough to permit doing that IF your smith is confident he can get a good weld.
Note also the need to check the serial number and research with H&H to determine whether the 8 bore had the original ratchet rifling of first generation Paradox guns, or whether it moved to the more normal land and grooves of later years. (Not sure anyone does ratchet rifling these days, but just don't know.)
Believe you'd want to get the gun reproofed in London if you did this...
Regards, Tim

The 8 would of had to have the original 7 groove ratchet rifling. I don't believe Holland made an 8 paradox after 1900 and that would have been before they went to a 9 groove rifling system, which still had about 40 points of choke. The 8 is still very unique and probaly could be shot with a round ball load.

I believe it's possible to make inserting rifled chokes, there are enough meat at muzzle in 8 bore paradox double, but who could make it I have no idea, it's very very complicated job.

I suspect that Briley might be of some help.

Hello:
While I have not attempted to re-bore a H&H I have had great success with another large caliber rifle. The bore of the rifle had poor rifling from poor storage, the gun itself was nearly pristine. I contacted a number of 'Experts" and we found that by re-boring we may be able to get the original caliber back, once the heavy barrel was re-bored, it was then sleeved, the sleeve was rifled into the original caliber. The only way one could really notice was the muzzle, it appeared to have a sleeve, and it did and it functioned great. Now, I just purchased a very nice Cape gun, 16 Gauge and a rifle caliber that is to obsolete to find brass for, I intend to do the same with it. Double guns are different and not just barrels resting S/S, the gunsmith knows this or should, I am sure my Cape will turn out just as good as the rifle. I hope this helps....barrels can be sleeved-bored-etc. There really is a couple quetions though, Collector value and the shooting condition, both should be reviewed before attempting any modifications, I am a shooter as well as a collector, I shoot what I collect. Cheers. Michael

Michael-
Welcome to the site! Please some time when you can, post some photos of the work you've done on these reboring/sleeving jobs.
Enjoy yourself around here. The scenery can be nice at times!
Cheers Tinker
