PaulJ, 20 ga. AyA round(ed) action Numba 2, special order wood, currently at $1475 Gunbroker. Parkeresque stovebolt 12 ga. Fox SW same site starting 650, no bids thus far. Browning SSs showing up at 7C level. Ithaca cull of the week right here in the neighborhood. Liquidation has begun. You may soon have bagfulls of 50 dollar 97s but first be sure to pick up a Matty Mattel clone while prices are still high.

The $200 tag for that commercial trench was a bit steep and I could have picked up ole' Mossberg for $100, but there would be no tung oil stained walnut. What's a Matty Mattel clone? Is it one of them assult-style toys with black plastic furniture?

I'm not letting this one go nope not going to let it go, some of this specifically mentions the Model 12 but could have easily have been a Model 97, war reporters are not always the most reliable with their information, I quote;
"the modern concept of the combat shotgun was fully developed by the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. The trench gun, as it was called, was a pump action shotgun loaded with six rounds containing antimony hardened 00 buckshot. The shotguns proved effective enough to elicit a diplomatic protest from the German government, claiming the shotguns caused excessive injury, and that any troops found in possession of them would be subject to execution. The US Government rejected the claims, and threatened reprisals in kind if any US troops were executed for possession of a shotgun. There is no evidence that the Germans carried out their threat, and that was the only challenge to the military legality of the shotgun.

The shotgun was also well suited for house-to-house fighting. An example of this effectiveness is an event from September 27, 1918, An American soldier armed with a Winchester Model 12 trench gun, single-handedly retook a German-held French village, routing 30 German soldiers."

Now go find another shotgun with that type of reputation earned on the trap field, the hunting field and the battlefield!!!

What we called the M-16 in the late sixties, Paul. Lot of injection-molded plastic. TV news features indicate run on ARs at shops nationwide. Hoping to grandfather them to "pre-ban" again. I don't understand. If I wanted a varmint rifle I'd get a nice one. If I salivated for military hdware, I'd get an M1A. What I like best is my M1 with "Holbrook" device altho I'm almost too old to pick it up.

Don't shoot varmints, but if I wanted to I would buy one of those CZ mini mausers in cals. .223 or .222 with synthetic stock and put rest of cash in high quality Leupold target scope.
