I use raw linseed oil and if it's really bad scrub it down with 0000 steel wool. For this stock I used lots of raw oil until it was very wet with it and used a cloth to clean with as well as paper towels. What I try not to do is to cut down below the surface of the oxidized (patina) in order to leave as much as the original finish as possible. Sometime take an old gun stock and rub in the oil with your hand then clean with a white paper towel and see the amount of dirt you have removed.

Thanks....here is the reason for the question. The checkering on this one has a lot of imbedded dirt and I'm trying to figure out a safe way to clean it without damage...Art

I use a toothbrush on the checkering but don't use it on the smooth finished wood, it'll scratch the finish. the linseed oil (or other cleaner/softener) will soften the old oil & dirt in the checkering, allowing the toothbrush bristles to loosen and remove it. Purple Power (brand name) has also worked well for me.

On a really foul 1868 Springfield I used half and half turpentine and linseed oil rubbed on by hand and stripped off with a coarse cloth. In the really bad spots I added just a bit of 0000 rottenstone and/or gently used bits of OOOO steel wool. It cleaned nicely without damaging the patina under all that grime. Your stock doesn't look bad at all and just linseed or lemon oil and a toothbrush should clean up the checkering.

Rob, it's an 8x60 made by Simon Heim, Nurnburg dated 9/28. Fortunately it can still be converted back to claw mount. I'm thinking of putting it up for sale and want to clean it up.

Anyone know what a 'P' marking on the barrel signifies?

The barrel looks like an issue barrel and the "P" is the mark that the barrel was proof-tested. There should be some letters and a date on top of the barrel just in back of the front sight. Is this rifle also marked "Sedgley"?

Nope, but it's *sanitized* like a Sedgley (no receiver markings, no barrel dating) and the serial number is in the right spot - 21xx on the bolt track in the tang.

Bottom of the barrel, under the chamber, is marked "30.06" over "J.A." (Johnson Automatics?) and "98D" on the underside of the receiver's front ring.
