I use raw linseed oil and if it's really bad scrub it down with 0000 steel wool. For this stock I used lots of raw oil until it was very wet with it and used a cloth to clean with as well as paper towels. What I try not to do is to cut down below the surface of the oxidized (patina) in order to leave as much as the original finish as possible. Sometime take an old gun stock and rub in the oil with your hand then clean with a white paper towel and see the amount of dirt you have removed.
