That's nice pic of grandpops. Thanks for posting Ole' Rancher. Ok, I was wrong about 1897 it's extremely ugly but very effective and efficient scatter gun. Using "Trenchie" instead of chainsaw, sledge and ax on my ole' picnic table isn't vandalism at all. You see, the Ithaca Trench gun is an effective tool and using it on that ole' weathered clunker was pure joy. What's wrong with turning labor into joyous activity?

I've got one and I've killed quite a bit of game with it. Nothing wrong with a '97 in my eyes, particularly if it's got a 32 inch barrel.

I'm with the other boys, anybody that thinks they might get hurt shooting one shouldn't own guns at all.

For whatever reason some people on forums think it's appropriate to run down whatever you post. Rest assured that the majority of the membership appreciates these posts and thoroughly enjoys older firearms. Don't let these idiots get you down as were all primarily here to enjoy older firearms.

And somehow it's becoming more and more common. I think the smile on the hunter's face says about all we need to know.

Last Dollar: It's a great picture of a great time. You can't buy memories.

Last Dollar, that is a great photo. Thanks for sharing! I have never shot a '97, but now I wish I could. A vintage '97 seems like a perfect pairing to a vintage Lefever.

Yeah, and Danger is my middle name.

I eat bologna sandwiches made with real mayoniase.

And I talk back to my menopausal wife.

And I only floss ONCE a day.

And I eat real butter on my baked potatoe.

And I drive a rollover prone Ford SUV.

So I am probably destined to own an '97 in sixteen gauge.

If you buy 12ga and something breakes down you can probably use parts of new Chinese-made copy. You will be the owner of one of the ugliest sporting repeaters ever made.
Now I'm going to watch Charles Bronson slam-fire Mod 12? in the movie Manhunt.

Johnson may have got rid of the hammer but he didn't break the Browning mold with the model 12. American Gothic; real horse'n buggy, dirt road guns. I think importation of the NorInCos is verboten for some reason that has escaped me.

Well, Paolo, you are running true to form with some 5100 posts to your name and not a blessed constructive thing to say.

Not surprisingly, some of us here find the M97 to have some of the sleekest lines among the American pumps. Couldn't have been too ugly with a production run of sixty years. Name one trigger bow that even comes close to the gracefulness of that found on a M97....or the smaller frame size gauge for gauge (in 12-16) in comparison to most other makes.

For me, Models 12s' are the equal of 97's aesthetically, but don't seem to hold up as well to the abuse of heavy recoil/high volume shooting the way a Model 97 will over many years due to the angled lock-up in the Model 12. Nonetheless, it is still a great-looking, great-handling gun (of which I own a few), but it is not the work horse of the M97 for high volume use IMO.....unless one doesn't mind re-doing the headspace work as needed.

So, best keep at that yard trimming of yours with the Model 37 Ithaca, as it suits my impression of you, and do pardon us 'ignernt' few that know what we're looking at in pumpguns.

Bob

P.S. - As for your remark above re: the pic of "Grandpops" - a little respect for your elders would be a nice change. And should you actually be older than the gentleman in that picture, then a little maturity on your part would suffice as well.
