Yesterday I loaded some Magtech brass shells with black powder, nitro card, greasey fiber wad coated with vegetable oil, and a thin cardboard overshot card. I then topped it off with the waterglass I just purchased. The waterglass stuck to the cardboard overshot card just fine but not to the inside of the brass shell.

My best guess is the vegetable oil from the fiberwad coated the inside of the shell and the waterglass won't adhere. I guess I could clean the vegetable oil off with Windex after I put the fiber wad in ?

Anyway advice appreciated.

My best advice it to stop using the greasy fiber wad. Use them dry. I never liked the "water glass" much. I preferred a drop of Elmer's or other brand white glue, thinned a bit with water. The whole process is a PITA, IMO.

Mike, yes you are right I guess, oily residue on the brass.I seal my shells with a smear of RTV silicone gasket goo.

Jim thanks, The lube on the fiber wad is supposed to keep the burnt powder soft and easy to clean but I don't have experience shooting dry wads so I may give them a try. Cleaning the barrel is certainly much easier than I anticipated.

sal I have been using Duco Household Cement and arrow fletching cement - both worked well and smell like the glue I used to use when building model balso wood airplanes when I was a kid. Thank you.

I have 3 quarts of waterglass (minimum order) and would like to use it up. Anyone else?

Mike I also would bet the oil is preventing the sticking.

Best to use "dry" wads and carry a small spray bottle of "moose milk". Spray some down each barrel after a few shots. This will do more to keep fouling soft and reduce leading. If you're shooting skeet or trap, a trick that has worked for me is to shoot one or more rounds with smokeless loads after the BP. My barrels will usually be almost clean, after this.

How much does a henway? A hen usually weighs 2 to 3 lbs. as an adult bird, less as a poult. How much does a waterglass hold? Again, depending on size of the glass, my guess is average 8 ounces. That's a lot of shot for one shell there Am.Mikey Boy.

Not being a BP man, last year in late season for Geese in Central MI- got checked by the "Raccoon Rangers"-had the P.O.C. Mossenburgher 835 12-license, stamps (signed too) and all steel shot-clearly marked on each plastic hull-but, check this out- They use a magnet, as apparently some guys reload the hulls marked steel with non-steel loads. All mine passed-but if anyone on this web shoots a 12 bore repeater for waterfowl-that will chamber 2 and 3/4", 3" and the Roman candle 3 and 1/2" loads, a word of caution. The std. factory magazine plug for this black beast- works for the 2 and 3/4" and 3"- max. of two in the tube and one in "da pipe" you are legal- BUT will only hold Two shells if you are using the 3 and 1/2" shells-one with some room to spare in the tube, and again, one up Da pipe. A friend with the same P.O.C. M'burgh but the 935 semi-autoloader version loves to "sky rake" Geese-and he's damn good at it too- but he wanted his 3 shots- so he retro-fitted a shorter plug to give him three shots with the 3 and 1/2" hulls-and was cited, fined and they kept his shotgun-Word Up, Dudes!!

I use a waterglass seal in MagTech brass with, basically, no problems. I use wads greased with a mixture of toilet bowl wax and olive oil, so they're pretty goopy. My routine has evolved to a lacquer thinner wipe before pouring shot and sealing - no worries. The pre-evolution mode was to just ram the wad, pour the powder, place the wad and seal it. They held enough to get the job done, but with handling some of them would try to walk out a bit.

Well lets see here 2 3 1/2" shells loaded measure about 6" end to end, and 2 2 3/4" shells loaded measure about 4 1/2" end to end. Thats a difference of 1 1/2" .Even if the difference was 2" you could still get a plug that would accept 2 3 1/2" shells and not allow 3 2 3/4" shells.

Hope you got the answer you needed, but a question comes to mind concerning brass hulls and BP. That being, why do you use them? I only own one hammer (breechloading) gun, a Remington, and I have always loaded Federal paper hulls for it, with BP or low pressure smokeless. Is there something about the chamber dimensions of some guns that require the use of brass hulls, or do you just like using them for nostalgia sake? Not trying to stir anything up, just curious.
