I would never propose to synopsize a poster's opinion, but I think my friend, Joe Taylor, would agree that some guys shoot them and some guys study and collect them, but if you don't do both, you are missing something. I shoot other things with pigeon guns and I shoot pigeons with guns intended for other things. I wouldn't do it any other way.

Dave K, Nice photos of a nice 'Continental'Heavy Actioned Gun.A point that I haven't seen mentioned in this discussion on Pigeon Guns is the Depth of the 'Detonating' This is a term used at Purdeys, Its the thickness from the face of the action to the back of the action, the point where the 'Hammer/Tumbler' stops after it has struck the F/Pin. I'm sure that there are people better versed' in words of 'Gun-Speak' than I, who can correct my terminology. (maybe I should call Pete Nelson,Action Filer/Gunmaker&(Old Fart)We did our"Time" together at JP&S.)When 'Putting-Up'a new gun we had to note 'Game-Gun, Pigeon-Gun.The Stocker had to set the trigger/triggers,from the face of the action back to the inside curve of the trigger. That was when the thickness of the "Detonating really showed up" We then built the stock & forend for the desired weight for the finished gun, Field/ Pigeon.I used a photo of a JP&S Pigeon Action with the Jig'for the T/F/Face in Our'Shot/G/Tech.Book p 186-187.Good Thead this,'So Much to Learn, so Little Time!!!CC...'Have a safe Thanksgiving,Dont shoot at shadows in the woods!

C.C., Your earlier post(which by the way appears to have evaporated from this thread)mentioned a Purdey pigeon gun with 3 sets of barrels, one of which was a long chambered 20 bore. This peeked my interest as I have seen/handled/owned/heard of,several heavy, long barrelled, long chambered,20 bores which appear to be built/stocked as "pigeon guns".I have also heard the term "Lancashire sparrow guns"which appear to be 20 bore live bird guns. Are you familiar with this term/guns???.I am guessing that sparrows/starlings may have been used in this variation of pigeon shooting in the North??
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

..TL,My evaporated post.....It's still there! under your photos & the letter from Russell. Page 4.Iv'e not heard the Lancashire sparrow gun name, but in 1881 a 3.1/2" chambered 20b Purdey could have been used to shoot "Peasants"!!!!!I have a 'Eley' or a Early ICI Catl. with a description of said shell. When I'Cased the finished gun, I turned up' a pair of Ebony 20b 3.1/2"'dummys'.I had the complete'Unit'at the Northbrook Shoot last May.Barry L Hands has Several good photos in his computer. I think 'The worlds Youngest'Old Writer' shot on a Starling Shoot in the Isles of Britain several years ago. CC

Doc Bill, thank you for the advice. I like your idea of removing the metal before it's fully hard. I've done this on less critical applications but probably wouldn't have had the guts to do so on this one, without your experience. And yes, it's hard to use too much release agent. I must confess to using the blue stuff Brownells supplies, then applying paste wax over that.

The Pigeon Gun topic...Ian re your email.Notice the;Depth of the Detonating on all 3 of these Pigeon 12bores, so the length of the Firing pinis 'Much longer than a "Light Game Gun". Also the weight of the complete gun with 2 Loaded Shells is something I take into consideration when Balancing the gun after building a 'NeW' stock, I shot all 3 three of these 'Masterpieces'The Boss 3" was a "Reacher-Outer"!! The Late and Great Jack Mitchell was Smokin Clays at Addiville Farms Sporting Clays Facility so far out.......Honest Injin! Geoff Gaebe said he set a New Distance Record for Breaking Clays!!!Also notice the Side-Clips' on the Boswell & The 'Joe Lang'(I think side-clips is another Purdey term, But I will stand corrected if 'McIntosh is WRONG!!!!! Older Doc' Ray StLedger did a nice job with the Re-Colour-Case Hardening! Glad I didn't slip with the Draw-Knife when I was 'Making-Off the 'OLD Tyessier French Blank!!!C/C
