This threads been an eyeopener for me as I've never heard of the flush method of hunting turkeys and it's certainly different from anything I've ever seen in the Upper MidWest. It certainly sounds like a blast though in more ways than one. Jim

Turkey dogs are widely used in Virginia where they also have a long tradition of hunting deer with dogs and buckshot. Many times the turkey hunters are using No 4 buckshot. I hunt with a club when the turkey and deer seasons are both open and I load for turkeys and pass on the deer unless they are really, really close. It just so happens that I shoot a Scott Monte Carlo B 12 GA.

Turkey hunting with dogs goes way back...sometime before 1900. Methods varied in different areas. One method years ago was to flush the turkeys into trees in the winter and shot them with small caliber rifles. My research shows this practice was frowned on by allot of hunters...combine that with declining turkey populations and it's easy to see why turkey dog hunting was outlawed in most states. Rifles are illegal most places...Turkeys are back...dogs are back.

Joe, Thanks for sharing. Never tire of hunting stories and photos. Hope like hell you didn't shoot them in the a-- running away. You'd stir up a lot of grief for yourself if you did. Question time??? What's your dogs name? It's not "Gobbler" is it? Are the fall birds working mast in the hardwoods? Beechnuts, acorns {not the democrat type}? What call do you use for gathering the flock? "Free beer in the basement" works best in my area. Keep on sharing. Randy

RMC his name is Buster the Brown Bomber. This is the start of his 5 season...I'd have close to 100 kills over him if I could shoot better.
Thanks George I never really left...I just was warned that some thin skinned skOOl girls had their pOnties in a wad and wanted me banned from posting on here.
Lowell I do have an orange collar I've just never used it. I need to start when I'm hunting public land. If someone ever shoots him you will be reading about me in the news paper....my only defense will be to plead insanity.

Did you mean Why do I "not" have a post on the not shooting sportsman board ?
There are some real knowledgeable people over there...just haven't saw much interest in the guns I'm interested in.
