As some of you know I'm having a G&H style Springfield sporter built by JD. The subject of wood has come up. What do I want? Well English with some figure with the famous black lines in the butt with good grain through the wrist and fore end. Now the question, where do I look for the blank and what do I look for? Any recommendations on how and from whom to buy a gunstock blank will be gratefully considered. Actually I would trust JD to make a good selection but a large part of the fun is doing it myself. JD will tell me when I've gone wrong.

Give Cecil Fredi a shout. He will have what you want. He will send you several pictures via email. He will keep doing that until you find the stock you want. http://www.gunstockblanks.com/Pete

I'll second that reccomendation. I have dealt with Mr. Cecil for many years as well as refer my clients to him. Never heard anything but praise for Mr. cecil. Ken

Thank you both. I've found his site and sent an email.

Here is an ad for a blank offered by the Richters. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=280276372941Scroll down and click on "About Me" to get to more of their better wood (not advertised on eBay). I've bought several blanks from them, and am very satisfied. Glenn Fewless has also purchased from them - he mentioned it in one of his posts here.

I am a fan of Quaking Aspens. Ray and Cathy have treated me very well and have become friends of mine. I believe all the wood I have posted pictures of here has come from them. I doubt you would be disappointed with their wood. It is very well pictured and what you see is what you get. http://familygrade.blogspot.com/They have some pretty nice full length blanks listed there now. A couple of them are almost nice enough to make a guy want a rifle with a one piece stock. I have threatened to buy one and make it into a floor lamp. Glenn
There is no sacrifice too great for someone else to make.

Try Pete Hiatt at: http://doublegunshop.com/petehiatt.htmPete can be a crotchety old rascal on the board but I've only heard one complaint about his wood- that from an ignoramous whose complaint was so laughable we had a good time with it over on SSMBBS. Pete's a sponser here and has been around this board since it's creation. Cary

I recently received a blank from them and can verify what Glenn said ! I have used Cecil for many years but recently found Ray and Cathy to offer great wood too.
