Found a nice gun auction. One gun is an LC Smith Field Grade .410 with a beavertail Forend and Single trigger. Here are some pictures. How do the case colors look? The gun is being described as like new. Serial number is 95,276.

There was also a Lefever EE 16 ga, but the seller states it likely has a cut stock. A Parker SBT, Baker Batavia Leader, and a Bernadelli are also up for auction. So many guns so little money!

That should be about 1927 and the case colors, at least in these somewhat dark pics, look legit. Lots of LC examples in the Case Colors PictureTrail http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=12588446&uid=6511424
Here's a like new .410 at CSMC for comparison

Thanks Revdoc!

I am also curious to hear from anyone as to the originality of the Single trigger and beavertail forend.

Alex, If it is a Hunter One Trigger it should say it on the trigger plate housing. The only way to tell if the beavertail is original is to take the forend iron off and see if the wood is serial numbered to the gun. So many L.C. Smith Field grade guns after 1919, lost their forends because of the way they were made. Hunter Arms knew of this problem and issued a proclamation stating that all L.C. Smiths were to have the surplus ejector forends put on except Field Grades. In 1913 L.C. Smith used the Curtis Forend fastener (like anson & dealey)on all of their non-ejector guns until around 1919 when they put a memo out stopping the use of it, a patent conflict, so starting using surplus ejector forends except on Field Grades
If this gun you are looking at has the Miller One Trigger, I don't know what there is to know. L.C. Smith let you order what ever you wanted, and the Beavertail forend was one of them, but like I said, the wood should be serial numbered also, under the forend iron or on the end where the two small screws are holding the forend parallel.

Also Alex, as far as telling if the case colors are true, In my opinion that is a tough call. I think that you would have to look at the blueing for any wear marks, look closely at the stock for dings, scratches, etc. You would have to look at everything and decide if it looks like an 80 year old gun. These guns were made to be used, and it should reflect on the overall appearance. There probably aren't that many that were "closet queens".
As far as the one on CSMC, I think he will have that for a long time at that price.
I don't know what the policy is on the gun you are looking at, but you could get informaion from the Cody Museum and it would tell you what the gun had when it was shipped, to whom, and when.

Alex, your pics are a little dark to tell about the color. I adjusted the levels on them and can email them to you to post if you'd like. The colore are very vivid, the rest of the gun should match. Thaat earlier Grade 2 gun that you and I were looking at back in the spring wasn't so vivid.

BTW the gun for sale at CSMC, in the last picture, the forend iron and the through lug look a bit too beat up for "brand new".

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Thanks guys. I have to have my absentee bid in by 8 pm. I'm still not sure what I will do. The bluing is in great condition all over. I think it does say something about being a single trigger on the underside of the gun, but I can't tell what. I will call them back.

Thanks again. This place is the best.
