DD, are those "sporting" firearms? They have a certain man-killer look about them (and I don't mean Mannlicher)--cavalry or mounted police carbines maybe?

WJL's comment about the Comblain was meant in jest, but the Comblain is a piece of work that deserves to be made into a custom project. At least the Comblain will never suffer the indignity of a comment about "not enough steel". Is there a Comblain custom out there?

Eightbore you are correct. I actually do like the Comblain (even like those mutated Martinis). It is a purpose built military rifle and likely a good one and I like most things that are well designed, well made, that efficiently fulfill a purpose. Being an old soldier I particularly like these old timer military rifles and would love to have one. They're still ugly, but so was Biscuit one of my best loved dogs.

Mike,

I suppose in the British parlance these would be MBL's-Military Breech Loaders.

They are frequently called Majuba Martini's or Improved Martini's. The generally accepted rifle of the Boers at Majuba was the Monkey tail but it is feasible that the 1871 could have been there. As to it being an improved Martini, WR's patent was filed 40 days before Martini's and as a result WR collected a royalty from Martini and RSAF for every MH made.

One of these two rifles of mine may become a WR Musket No. 2 sporting rifle.

No doubt the inspiration for the Ruger 'Woodside'.

Hmmm.... I don't find much inspiring about the Ruger woodside.

These W-R rifles are not exactly pin up girls in their military uniforms. Howsomever, they do in fact look quite good in a party dress. The sporting models were pretty easy on the eyes, to my way of thinking. I would like to see what could be done with one in a custom sporting configuration.

I have two of these coming in a shipment. Should be here in a few months. 1st is a Rodda in 450 WR, 2nd is a .500 Westley Richard with Whitworth rifling. They are a little different. But, lots of people say the same thing about me.
