Generically speaking, all "guns", ie; pistols, shotguns, rifles, bb guns, derringers, etc... are all considered guns.
But specifically, rifles are rifles, shotguns are shotguns or guns, pistols are pistols, etc...
It is just the way it has always been.

I can't allow the quirks of some gunmakers in London to dictate what is the proper definition of a gun, or any other word for that matter.

Well.... I hate to belabor the obvious, but a rifle is a gun. Hmm. Gee, then I wonder why the British firms that made both referred to themselves as "Gun & Rifle Makers" on their signed work and trade labels. Were Holland & Holland, Purdey, Rigby, Boss, Evans, Atkin Grant & Lang, Gibbs, Churchill, etc., just plain stupid? I can't allow the quirks of some gunmakers in London to dictate what is the proper definition of a gun, or any other word for that matter. I guess the finest gunmakers in the world know nothing of their trade. What a hoot.

They might know how to make a gun - but that hardly means they know the proper name for it. I'll bet if you took Mr. Purdey aside he'd tell you, "Bloody 'ell, I'm a gunmaker, not an English teacher."
Dirty Harry refers to his pistol as a handGUN - are you telling me you want to argue with Dirty Harry? Well do ya, punk?

Dirty Harry blinks every time he fires his handgun so I don't believe he is a real problem.Heck he even blinked back in his quick draws days long before they dreamed up SASS.Course back then he was Rowdey.
