What is the minimum distance the tip of the firing pin must extend beyond the breach face to have reliable primer ignition.

I have A and C grade Foxes that measure 0.055/0.062 and 0.049/0.053 and neither has experienced a misfire. Both guns have face off of less than 0.0015.

I have not been able to find a primer specification or gun
specification and the local gunsmiths are not aware of a minimum length.

Thanks

I've always worked with the numbers of between .045" and .055". That seems to satisfy most every spec I've come accross. If they're between those specs, I'm satisfied with it. If I'm fitting a new one or adjusting one, I usually set it up a bit less,,around .040", not that it makes that much difference. Just something I do.
I've had them alot less,, in the .030 range and they still seem to work fine. The less the better to avoid any primer puncture, but yet get good reliability.

Kutter,

Thanks for the input. I'll reassemble the guns and not worry
about the firing pins.

Thanks again.

i asked this same question a while back as i've got an army & navy SLE that had a broken right pin. had a machinist buddy make a replacement and a complete spare set while he was at it. his replacement protudes far less than the original on the left. i measured it and don't recall but i think it was about .030". so far it's run 100 rds of reloads with cheddite primers in 2 different hulls plus 75 rds of B&P 2.5" shells. granted, i alternate barrels every so often but at least half those went out the right barrel and all went bang just fine.

i agree with "the less the better"; the minimum that gives 100% ignition.

Cherry bomb,

Unfortunately, this is a first for me. I do have a recommendation from a friend and that is: use a tapered pivot pin to align and set the first hammer then drive through and center the other pin. Then drive out the tapered pin with the "real" pivot pin.

I know from experience that good advice, a lot of patience and going slowly will usually get the job done.

In addition, I know from experience that asking questions on this
site will usually result in finding a great solution. The members
are very helpful, knowledgeable and caring--a great group to have for support.
