GregSY, this only proves that you've been in the Parker state of mind for too long. For guns ol'beanpot - is the Englishmen's word for shotguns. Rifles is rifles, kinda like double rifle.
Where u been eh?

Well.... I hate to belabor the obvious, but a rifle is a gun. I could prove it in any number of ways.

Why, just the other day I saw an issue of Guns and Ammo and it had a bolt action rifle on the cover. How did that happen if a rifle is not a gun?

I could shoot you with a rifle and if you called the cops and told them, or any other human being alive, "I just got shot with a gun" they wouldn't refuse to prosecute me because they knew my defense attorney would have the case tossed out over your confusion of what I just used to shoot you.

A rifle is a specific kind of gun. A bolt action rifle is an even more specific kind of gun. A pistol is a gun, too. Gun is one of the most versatile terms you'll come across in life, second perhaps only to f*ck.

If a gun can't have rifling, why do we all know battleships are well armed with guns and not rifles?

And why is no one ever shot with a low powered rifle? All I ever hear is people being shot with a high powered rifle. I guess it's just like why no one is ever whelmed.

I'm whelmed by your answer.Just because Guns and ammo or the Navy don't know a gun from a rifle doesn't mean everyone needs to be lax.Of course now days pistol mean semi auto and revolver is different on the old gun listings.I often questioned that as single shots and revolvers were pistoles long before the semi was invented. On ships folks call them guns but in truth they are artilary pieces on cannon. Its all kinda like Comic Book which ain't realy a book.

I agree with Gregsy - gun can mean rifle, shotgun, or pistol. When you put the rifled barrel on your 12 gauge Browning pump to go deer hunting do you cease calling it a gun and start calling it a rifle?

Although I have immense admiration for the US Marine Corp they certainly can define the meaning of words for their purposes but not for the world.

Best,

Mike

Hmm. Gee, then I wonder why the British firms that made both referred to themselves as "Gun & Rifle Makers" on their signed work and trade labels. Were Holland & Holland, Purdey, Rigby, Boss, Evans, Atkin Grant & Lang, Gibbs, Churchill, etc., just plain stupid?

Battleships are armed with heavy naval rifles, not guns. The smoothbore muzzle-loaded naval weapons that armed men-of-war of the past are properly referred to as guns.

Sure, the word "gun" is widely misused, but repeating the error endlessly doesn't make it correct. A shotgun is a gun, a rifle is not.
