I say we let people chase factory made Mauser sporters for another decade or so while we keep scrounging for these old jewels. "Barney Worthen? Huh...never heard of him. But I'll take it off your hands for, oh...$500." I actually had that experience a few years ago at a major gun auction. The catalog did not mention the maker of a custom Springfield. While I was trying to read the tiny marking on the barrel, one of the employees of the auction house said "Oh, that is just the moron who used to own it!" What it said was "Barney Worthen, San Francisco, Cal."

Good advice all, I don’t think I would want to live what the fact that I’m holding other folks money, now that would be pressure. I have agonized over the “Name” not an easy task. I remember talking with the late James Grant who wrote five books on single-shot rifles and him telling me his biggest mistake was naming one of the books “Boys Rifles”. That book, IMO was his best but never sold well because of the name.
Here is a list of the article I have written since the book was published. I have no idea when the last two on the list will be published, they are at the magazine.
March-05 Precision Shooting F. Surkamer & E. Johnson April-05 Precision Shooting Shooting Mr. Niedner's Schuetzen rifle August-05 Precision Shooting Niedner's False-Barrel Rifle February-06 Precision Shooting Owen & Worthen Revisited July, 06 Precision Shooting Whelen's Wundhammer Feb, 2007 Precision Shooting Niedner's Underhammer March, 2007 Precision Shooting Depression Era Sporters Janurary, 2008 Precision Shooting Stewart Edward White's Wundhammer June, 2008 Precision Shooting Niedner's 1924 Rifle Precision Shooting Fred Adolph Revisited Precision Shooting When Was It Made

What it said was "Barney Worthen, San Francisco, Cal." It must have been the same auction house I got the solid frame one from. They listed two 1903 custom sporters without pictures. I emailed ask if they knew who the makers were and could they send pictures. Pictures arrived and one looks like Worthen to me. A dealer friend was going to the preview so I called him on his cell, he picked up the rifle and said it was engraved "Barney Worthen, San Francisco, Cal." on the barrel. Rest is history.

I just ordered your first collection. I'll be willing to prepay for a really nice book with color pictures, but, if nothing else, put together a collection of articles and insights with pictures on a disc. I've learned more about the classic bolt action in the last two weeks than I have in the last 10 years and I want more.

Who bought the Worthen takedowns that Steve Barnett offered for several months not long ago? They seem to be gone from his list. They were expensive so I never asked him about them. I don't do expensive unless it is something I know about.

A .222 Remington, huh? I wonder if it is stamped as such? If so, too bad. And a "Mauser" no less.
