Does anybody remember the Purdey butt dimensions described in Shotgun Technicana? I cannot find my copy. I have a pattern cut using those dimensions, but somehow I don't trust it. The maximum width is only 1 3/8" on my cut pattern. I remember something about 1 5/8 to 1 7/8 for max width and 5 to 5 1/4" in lenght. Also there was a certain progression of the width... Thank you anticipately.

I can remember a lot of pretty butt dimensions! However, if you go to Wal Mart, you will see a lot of butt dimensions that you will want to forget!

Page 40 "Although there are exceptions, butts typically range in depth from 5 1/16 inches to 5 5/8inches........In general, a 14 1/2 - inch stock should have a 5 1/4 inch butt, and one that's 15 inches long should go 5 1/2 inches deep."
Page 44 "The standard width is about 1 5/8 inches for a 12 bore but may be a bit smaller according to the gauge of the gun"

Thank you, Gents,
I had to find the book... The diameters of the series of circles that define the shape of the butt starting at the heel is as follows: 5/8 + 1/32, then 3/4 + 1/16 bare, then 3/4+1/16 full, then 3/4+1/16 bare, then 5/8+3/32, then 1/2+3/32, then 7/16 for the toe. This gives a depth of over 5 1/2". I subtracted 1/16 out of each diameter and obtained a smaller butt with a depth of 5 1/16". I am cutting a stock for a Darne. I don't know why I should use Purdey's measurements other than for the sake of proportion. LOP is 15" to the middle of the butt with 1/8 added to the bump and 1/4 to the toe. Thank you to Mr. Trevallion for this info and a lot more on cutting stocks. Had I read the chapter with more attention I could have avoided a bunch of mistakes.
