Had a great time at Vintagers with my dad. Was on the lookout for some odds and ends, RST ammo (10 GA. non-toxic) and then while walking tent through tent, I found staring at me with tears of neglect an old H Grade Lefever (33XXX) sitting in a rack with a few other neglected arms. I won't bore you with the typical particulars (filthy barrel, old oil globs/stains all over the entire gun and even some white paint on the stock and barrel and to top it off, the main plate screw was not connected with the RH plate) I really didnt want it as I have some other more in-depth "projects" but for $200 I started thinking about it as atleast a parts piece for my other 2 Lefevers should something go wrong. As I picked it up, the owner said take it now for $150.00 and so I happily gave him the cash.
I am glad I did as that evening after some beer and crabs, I put some elbow grease into the old gal and believe it or not, it may be the nicest H grade I have ever personally encountered. It actually has about 70% of the original case hardening and the barrels are pristine (no dents and no corrosion/pits). I am not sure how I will get the paint dots (tiny splatter) off the stock without damaging the finish but will try different things. Oh, I guess there was atleast one main fault and that was the fact that the right sear V spring was missing. I guess that is why the right plate was off? If anyone has one laying around, I would be very interested in procuring it from you. If not, I will take to Dewey Vicknair as he promised he would whip one up in an hour or so.
Needless to say, I cant wait to take this old gal out in the field. Per Vintagers, I hope those of you went had as much fun as my dad and I did.
Take care.
Cordell
