SB&Co also provided barrels for Lefever. On the Lefever guns the SB&Co stamp many times also has a diamond or rhombus shaped stamped near the SB&Co stamp. Perhaps an inspection mark rather than a maker's mark? SB&Co appears in the Syracuse city directories of the 1880's.

In the 1880's English exports in the gun trade to the USA started a steady decline. SB&Co had the foresight to set up a plant here. This allowed them to avoid the disastrous fate that would hit other British firms with the McKinley tariff of 1890.

The only other point, is that I agree the rounded crown is Delcour-Dupont. There is a pointed crown which appears to be Deidere. a French firm. Add Whitworth and Krupp to the mix, we have a global gun trade with parts being outsourced.

Thanks Pete.
That pic turns out to be MY GUN (almost 2000 pics on the computer is getting out of control! ) and on careful examination I believe it is a 'SB&Co' and NOT 'SB&So'
Still no idea what the 'P' is.

Revdoc,
This is a work in progress! I have found the files containing the S. Buckley referrence and am searching for it at the moment. However, I have in hand (from that file) a sworn deposition dated 9/29/44 form H. Howland stating that Ithaca bought its barrel tubes from Flannery Bolt, Bridgeville, Pa And the frame forging from Clapp, Auburn, NY. I knew they bought frames from E.D. Clapp but didn't remember the Flannery connection. We know Flannery made .45 barrels during the war and I have a M-37 barrel drawing with Flannery's name on it. So-- the .45 barrels were marked with a F. The subject gun of the law suit was a `1929 gun so --the search continues.
OK, Found it.

It case you can't make it out:
"Paul,
Gun barrels purchased from J.J Riga and S. Buckley& Co. had approximately the following analysis... ."
It was signed by Harry Howland 11/17/44.
No definitive answers, perhaps more mystery.

Oh my. This is getting complicated.
My notes have the 'H.R.F.' mark of Heuse-Riga Fils found on some Flues models http://www.littlegun.be/arme%20belge/artisans%20identifies%20h/a%20heuse%20gb.htm
The littlegun site does not mention a J.J. Riga. Perhaps Pete could find them listed in his reference books.

I have a JJ Riga. He was granted a patent circa 1860 in Liege. No other info.

There was an Edward S Buckley who founded a steel making operation in PA that was in operation until the 1880's. It is a famous site, Hopewell Forge. http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/hh/8/hh8j.htm

There was also a Buckley Steel in operation in the Detroit area around WWII.

I did not think either of these fit the time frame Walt was referring to.
