I dunno, Mark. Is your refrigerator decorated? My SW, Parker and A & N are plain as pudding. Purity of line is elegant. Form follows function. I appreciate the art of engravers and craftmen. But it comes down to taste. Why embellish a beautiful shape? Golden lightning bolts and engraving doesn't put "soul" into a gun any more than a multi-million-dollar pile makes a home.

Pigs are loyal and have good nose-brains--something like dogs. Unfortunately, they also taste better than dog.
jack jack are you sure about that??? Jim

I bet this whole issue relates to pretty girls rejecting Lowell when he was a just a young high school nerd.

Yes james, but don't forget what Alaskan Governor Sarah Poland says: "The difference between a pig, a dog and a soccer mom? Lipstick!!"...............Denny Crane

Come now, Lowell, how can you be underwhelmed by these tasteful engravings from the storied firm, Holland & Holland? It's right there in their glossy catalog. Sometimes you can put lipstick on art and it's still a pig! Curl

In the pre-owned gunrooms, do the guns go to the shoulder first, or to the magnifying glass? I've just looked at a high end American hi-grade(name withheld to protect the touchy)...and trust me here mates - it was no gamegun!

Well, it almost always adds enjoyment, value, and attractiveness of quality guns. Best, Mike

I guess those lads in London never went through the big shinny bumper stage of life. The first gun must be Elton John's eh!

Lowell if you are too timid to debate the fans of the brand go ahead and post some pertinent details like weight, gauge, barrel length, chokes, triggers, ejectors or extractrs, DOM etc... In other words some facts. Best, Mike

Just my little brush with a few Hollywood types, but I can tell you virtually all had a tendancy toward the engraving embellished as opposed to plain. Some more tasteless than others. Some very tasteful preference in their choice of engravings.
I have one friend that has had a few unengraved guns but with very expensive wood and checkering on high quality guns. He could afford most any engraving he desired, but opted for plain. So, I suppose it isn't always a matter of affordability. But, I'll be willing to bet it is about affordability more often than not.
BTW, y'all should go over to the Fox forum and look at Dewey's custom sideplated Fox with the engraving on it. Very tasteful, IMO. I think it was layed out to accentuate the sideplate job at it's best.
I will say that I believe an engraved gun with pretty wood attracts people to it in a used gun rack first before a plain gun of equal quality. The engraving and wood gets the once over, then the practical eval of the rest of the gun (and pricetag) takes place. 'seen it, done it myself. 'fact of nature.
