I recently bought a 1932 mfg. 20 ga. M12 field- had the baby crap brown Pachmayer "Whiteline" pad- and the pebbled butt surface-fits me like a glove- I did the Bob Brister trick (I hold the shotgun butt under my armpit and slide it forward and back when mounting- "Limey Style"--I used Scotch black electrician's tape=No more white line- Just for the "Hey" of it- in the 1920's and 1930's- when Mershon sold those pads- most upper bracket cars had the big black ballooned tires with inner tubes and Big Fat Whitewalls-maybe from a marketing standpoint that's where Mershon got the "Whiteline" concept- and Pachmayer was a leader in "upgrading" basic M21's and Parkers- engraving, dummy sideplates-the "bells and whistles" of custom gunsmithing!!

The Model 71 was unlikely to have been fitted with a Mershon pad at the factory. I would have a reproduction 1922 Winchester solid red pad installed. This is the type of pad pad that would have been installed on a 71 at the factory.

I used to like them, when I used to like white wall tires, white belts, white shoes, & white sport coats. Now I just like my WHITE HAIR, I have to like it, because of my SxS habit. binko

The Fray-Mershon "Whiteline" pads appeared in the latter part of the 1930s. They are not in a 1934 Stoegers and they are in the 1939.

As MP linked, the patent application was dated 1937.

My Baker B grade, about 1908 or so, has a Mershon white line pad on it. Of course it was added much later but is still soft and does it's intended job perfectly. I rather like it as it is part of the guns character and history.

Jim, that will be the attitude of collectors in years to come. Replacing a ten years from date of gun production Mershon with a repro Hawkins or repro Silvers made last week doesn't seem to fit the collector mode.
