Dr. Bill, I am about to glass bed a 16 ga, 1907 Elsie. I am contemplating doing various regions in several steps (time-wise), but am somewhat concerned with potential alignment conflicts if all regions don't set simultaneously. I'm an experienced glass-bedder but find a sidelock shotgun a bit daunting.

Then after that, I need to (gulp) do a sidelock drilling.

I would GREATLY appreciate any detailed suggestions you might offer -- and pics would be wonderful.

Any gun that is over weight and clubish is sold as a pigeon gun.
I'd rather have a duck gun - a more tasteful shooting!
The dealers know they can't pass-off these as gameguns.....so we have pigeon guns.

Not that Lowell is in this category, but I have noticed that most guys who criticize the charm and usefulness of a larger than game gun fowler only own clubs themselves and are discussing theory, not experience. The Bruchet that Ted showed us is certainly not in the "club" category at 6 3/4 pounds.

Nothing to do with Ted's pics! Pigeon guns weight-in more at the 7lbs+ class.
...but everything to do with big guns, and big guys who just stand around waiting their turn to pop these dizzy cramped-up birds.

More probably small or average-sized guys with big balls and bankrolls to match.

A part of me believes that gun was built and proofed with 3" chambers to pattern well with modern ammunition, and NOT to routinely fire big cartridges at ducks. No desire here to deal with recoil like that...I prefer my retinas attached.

Couldn't agree with you more, Ted. It is a quite lovely piece nonetheless. I personally kinda view something like that in the same vein as many modern 20's that have no real or honest need at their finished weight for the 3" chambers they are oft fitted with. My apologies to Francis Sell.

On pigeon guns, for the early perspective there was 'Blue Rock' and in today's, in the American sense anyway, there is Michael Ray Forehand as authors of note who can provide the interested parties with valuable insights to the finer points.

Lowell is perhaps a bit out of his element contemplating rings and such, "No offense intended, your Lordship." Oberfell & Thompson didn't begin to scratch the surface where vagueries are concerned. Hence the term "the luck of the draw"

Ohhh My....

Whilst trying slightly to avoid the wrath of Glenthorne.....I must submit the following Lowelly example of what might be a "Pigeon" gun.

According to the repro factory brochure that I ordered from the dark side of CT that appears to be of the same vintage as the specimen above (wich I recall Reasercher and Mr Snyder referred me to?)...this would be "No.2 Krupp Pigeon"...and, although it is listed as available in all the gauges of the moment, which would surley preclude most of them from being "Pigeon" guns....

This one is 8Lbs, choked full and full, 32" tubes and straight stocked(and not much drop)...tapered rib (blasphemey...no clubishness?!). Might also have actually been chambered for 3" hulls(2.8 sumthing chambers).

Also, at 6'2" and 180#...I would have to, and will, take exception to being one of the "big guys who just stand around waiting their turn to pop these dizzy cramped-up birds."....with "big guns" ?

Never shot boxed or otherwise "un-wild" birds with this particular example....and, I'm 40..gained 15lbs since I was 16....Lowelly Gilded Thorne Tounge?
