By chance found this little beauty surfing a upland site i visit often. Someone had posted a link to this orphan. Couldn't get any info from the owner(i tried). We settled on a price i thought was fair for a low grade and he finally shipped it. Well this is what i got!

It's a E grade!
Now for the bad part!

I wish I had the money for that beauty. I knew it was a great deal as soon as I saw it. Glad a board member got it.

Is that the gun from a man in Northern Utah? If so, I saw it on KSL.Com but was too late.

The gun......early E grd. choked 27 thou in each barrel. I'm surprised, there isn't a pit hole in the bores. Only one small dent in right tube. Weight from my digital fish scale is 6# 15oz. I'll refinish the damascus pattern to black and white, but i need suggestions on what to do with the wood?

I would buy E grades like that for $600 all day long.

A couple of options come to mind. If you can do the inletting, get a blank and have it carved. There was some one here who could hide that with creative use of paint, just can't remember the name. Also seem to remember that Chuck H had a "transplant" method that would work on that butt stock.

If you got that for $600.00 you certainly did great in my opinion. @ 6'15oz do you have a "Short Armed Wife" you could fix it up for, now don't be stingy. If not maybe you just need to trade for one .
It is a pity about the stock, but surely someone here can come up with a fix, other than another one of those pads. Is this a 12 or 16, that wt could go either way. Also is it safe to assume this is a Two-Hook gun?

If you are monitoring this thread this gun has the plate mounted sears. Note the end of the screw visable ahead of & above the plate mounting cross screw, but behind the cocking indicators. Also you can see the sear adjusting screws in the lower rear of the plates. Also the pin ends for the bbl check hook are visable in the edges of the side views just where the sculpting starts on the bar. Single hook guns had no need of this pin so it was omitted, though some exist which were made up from an older frame or refitted with an action upgrade in which the center section was cut out.
The two little screws in frame bottom on wither side of the trigger plate are the rebound screws & bear against the lower limb of the mainspring.

Six hundred is very good deal for that gun, but you need to throw away that piece of leather. I'm cheap but for that gun I would get one of them real expensive fancy-smancy chesnut-colored pads from Galco.

Battle, I might be the person Pete was talking about that can hide that with paint. I've filled in 3/8" deep gouges and made them invisible, but it does require a refinish obviously. Is that a 16ga.? If so, I hate you. I paid $850 for my H grade recently and I thought that was a great buy. Of course, the wood is immaculate, so maybe it still is a great buy.
